[No Longer Available] Alien Regrade (Fox THX Laserdisc)

Still think 100% is too saturated... 80% is fine to me - in this monitor, at least... Wink

Same here, I like the darker look than the BD although the second pic looks like it could use a little more brightness.

In terms of saturation I agree with Andrea and alexpeden2000, 100% is too saturated, 80% is definately better IMHO.

In terms of brightness I agree again with alexpeden2000, the second and third comparisons at 80% feel too dark, they look like they could use a slight brightness boost. It would help if you could include the LD screencaps as well so we could see what the brightness is like there, see how close your screencaps are in terms of brightness/contrast.

Finally in terms of fleshtones, if you're trying to recreate the LD fleshtones exactly, in the first comparison with John Hurt, your fleshtones currently look too red compared to the LD fleshtones that look more orange. If you're not going for recreating the LD fleshtones however they look fine.

Hope this helps.

Brighter, got it. I can change up the brightness per scene that needs it. Thanks alex and kk

You know, Doombot has the Alien re-release cinema DTS, maybe it could be edited to fit this version so you'd have another audio option.

Just a thought for you to ponder.

I'd love to included it Jetrell Fo. Thanks for the recommendation. Doombot has helped me out with a ton of stuff so I'm sure he will have no problem getting me a copy.

I would just need to see is syncing is possible. The big parts should be easy to fill in from the BD's 5.1. Only problem I can see is that I think the DC has a ton of extra shots, amounting to seconds here and there. That might be a pain.

The other problem is size. That would bring the total tracks up to 4:

1. DD 5.1 LD 70mm Test Sensurround Track
2. DTS 4.1 BD's Dolby Stereo 70mm Track
3. PCM 2.0 LD Dolby Stereo Matrix Track
4. PCM (or DTS-HD) MA 5.1 Cinema DTS 5.1 Track

So that's about 7 or 8 GB of soundtracks minimum. Compressing the PCM 2.0 to DTS-HD MA will help save some space, maybe 6 GB? I don't want to go up to a 50GB disc unless I have enough extras to put on there, of which Jonno had a few interesting things.

In related news I've fixed the video for Alien sans one shot that I went back to the drawing board on. I ended up punching down the saturation to match the pics earlier in this thread. So getting close (again). I need to now figure out if I can do menus. Which I have no idea how to do, yet.

I might need some volunteers to look at a test disc to see how it looks before I offer to everyone.

I would think that as long as we have the pcm for this, editing the cinema DTS would be easier anyways. It's worth a gander anyways.

Definitely going to give it a try, thanks again Jetrell.

It's worth noting that the director's cut (and thus its DTS mix) is missing sections of the theatrical cut - some shots have been trimmed for pace, and the entire "What are my chances?" exchange is gone.* A redeployment of the DTS material will inevitably be quite a patchwork, and something of a curio considering *that* film was never heard that way.

*Side note: that last one is an interesting decision, given that it was originally added quite late in the editing process - it's actually made up of footage shot for Dallas' first Mother conversation intercut with new onscreen graphics. It's a terrific demonstration of the Kuleshov effect, considering that Skerritt wasn't acting even slightly apprehensive at the time! Perhaps the addition was requested by the studio, feeling more emotional exposition was needed? If so, I can't help but agree with them...
