Thanks for the clip!

If I have to choose, I'd go with LD grading; but, even if BD is too much teal in almost all the shots, LD grading is often a bit too much magenta; would you try to make a mix between them, to lower the magenta tones? Don't know if a plain 50/50 will do, maybe a 40/60 or viceversa...

I know, I know, I want to much! Wink

I've just checked out the clip. First of all, great job PDB!!! Colour continuety is maintained, image dynamics are solid, overall it looks very nice indeed, very solid grading effort overall. Only one shot do you clearly lose colour continuety for me, from 1:13-1:17, the blue is far too saturated compared to the preceding and next shot, that needs to be toned down a fair bit. Apart from that, very nice, nothing that took me out of the film. Very much looking forward to seeing the rest of this. Smile

As for accuracy in reproducing the LD colours, I don't have the Laserdisc so I can't really comment. Andrea seems to have that covered though.

Outside the very saturated Mother/MUTHUR scenes that's probably the most extreme colors in this LD version of the movie (That and when Ripley is looking for Jonesey). I posted that scene like I posted the Mother scenes on the OT just to see how it plays, so I liked to hear your reception Andrea, thanks.

Believe it or not it took days of color manipulation to get the magenta on the regrade to match the LD lol. Those keys that Ripley punches to enter in the self-destruct were so hard to get just right. Having said that let me see if I can peel it back a bit.

Side note: I have to setup a thread for Blade Runner. That was original using a different source to regrade until Jonno gave me a copy of the Criterion LD. That LD matches the BD more closer but does have a few places where it varys greatly. Here is an interesting one. In the BD the sky is dark whereas in the LD there is the yellow, most likely reflecting the sun rising.

The 3 LDs transfers I have (TC, IC, DC) all have a yellow tint to them that is lacking in the BDs.

PDB, I think your work is great: the LD grading applied to the BD works very well, and it's very close, if not the same, to the actual laserdisc. Said that, I still would be curious to see another version mixed with the original BD grading! Wink

About Blade Runner: I didn't watch it in the theaters at the time, but I watched it a lot of times on TV, VHS and of course LD, and as far as I can remember, this scene was always golden like the LD... of course, it doesn't mean it's the "right" one or the same seen in theaters, but probably it is... Keep up the good work! I wish I had a talent like yours and spoRv and others. As it is, I just enjoy what is offered and try to cheer lead things along. I'm the moral support guy!! LOL

Thanks for the nice comments kk650. Sorry I missed you response earlier. Let me take a look at that scene. Is it when Ripley is going through the steam filled hallway after setting the self-destruct? That seems to be one of the more extreme color changes in the regrade, so if that plays ok the rest of the film will easily play.

Does your LD capture have any magenta in that scene? On the keypad? Is the blue the same level. I can tone it down a bit. This will be a pretty close to the LD project but there will another version. A second version is already planned. I may have an even better Alien project on the back burner.

Hopefully Blade Runner will be completed faster then Alien. Glad to know you have seen the same yellow tint in your video release also. Its always great to have more confirmation that I'm hopefully heading in the right direction.
