The 1987 Laserdisc of Aliens is a mixture of Open Matte and Pan & Scan, and could be useful for a UAR version of Aliens.

In practice, the difference in quality, color, contrast, would make it really difficult, if not impossible! New UAR example: (original post here: http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/1188347)

Surely it will look better than captured with a lower quality player; *maybe* it could be matched with a letterbox DVD instead using a BD, where quality difference will be too much. I wonder if there is an open matte DVD around, as T2... About audio: what's about other following LD editions?

If someone is interested into the AOTC Centropy UAR, here you can find a test clip (8m15s, 160MB):

Yesterday I was joking with some of my finished and released projects - you know, maybe a new idea will come - and I've tested possible UAR versions...
Alien: D-theater used for my Fundamental Collection has quite more image on both sides, while BD often has few bit more on top and bottom (few lines, maybe a dozen). Dunno if someone could be eventually interested... but, I managed to tweak colors as well, and, even if the test does not use a reference (hence is a fan color edition, let's say) it is quite better than BD colors (indeed, it's not so difficult!) Aliens: HDTV has few scenes (namely, when the crew wakes up) that have more image on three sides - even in comparison with the open matte version, that is almost ready, by the way... I'm very tempted to release only the UAR version, as it will be basically the open matte with few UAR scenes... opinions? Alien: Covenant: UAR is great, and custom color grading bring new life to this film (yes, fan color as well... shoot me! ) That's all for the moment. Thanks given by: interaser

We can also make UAR versions of some of the Winnie the Pooh movies, but most easily, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
The Blu-ray can used as the main source, combined with the open matte 4:3 DVD. The widescreen Blu-ray does have some detail on the left and right sides which isn't on the DVD. The DVD that comes with the Blu-ray and is currently on print is the same 1:66:1 Blu-ray transfer, so it's useless. Colour corrected based on the DVD (Blu-ray looks oversaturated) and audio taken from an early VHS release for mono (the '96 LaserDisc is apparently a stereo remix but I hope it's just mono channels repeated in a stereo field), the Blu-ray is remixed in 5.1, but the 5.1 remix can be an alternate option. We can expect that the square aspect ratio would be around 1:37:1. Apparently, the 2007 Friendship Edition DVD is the best quality DVD release. And, if possible, two releases on DVD and Blu-ray. I personally prefer watching this movie on DVD on a CRT (even a really high-end one like a BVM) even if I have a 4K UHD player and an OLED TV just because it feels warmer, cozier and more nostalgic on a CRT with mono/stereo audio. I am just giving the ideas here.
And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

Someone could think that the widescreen version of a movie "touches" the original film frame on both left and right side, while fullscreen version "touches" the frame of top and bottom... well, sometimes it's true, but most of the time it is not the case... the original film frame could contain some, or a lot more, image than both widescreen and fullscreen, that could be lost forever (sadly)...
Example, Spider-man 2: widescreen 2.35:1, open matte 1.78:1, fullscreen 1.33:1, fast UAR "manual recreation" (made in two minutes, just to get the idea), and finally a frame from trailer (with more image) Conclusion #1: UAR could recover some of the lost image, but never all... still, I prefer to got that image recovered, even if partially. Conclusion #2: I'd never call a fullscreen (1.33:1 or 1.78:1) image full frame, UNLESS it actually includes ALL the image found in the original negative film (or digital cinema) frame. |
