Restoration tips: UAR - Ultimate Aspect Ratio
#31
Would love to see this applied to Fellowship of the Ring. The EE and Theatrical have different framing and at very least an extra wide 2.45/2.5 AR could be reached for some scenes. Seems like a good project to test the viability of variable aspect ratios across one movie.

Can you post some examples? I'm curious to see if something could be done - take in account also the different colors, though...

I'm at work on my phone, but you can see that the image stretches further to the left of one, the right of the other. LotR definitely benefits from the wide cinematic feel.

Difficult to say how much could be gain, but there are definitely more than few lines of vertical definition to get back...

I wonder if also the other films are the same. I've just (re)noted this on Alien Resurrection - DVD and LD have more details on both sides than BD, while the latter has a bit more on top and bottom... I've tried to use the DVD to "enlarge" the frame, but they are almost surely from different scans, and it's quite difficult - if not impossible - to align both properly... Sad

With LOTR, at the contrary, *seems* easier; we'll see...

I believe Fellowship is the only one that got a new transfer. The process would be difficult though - the image focus moves, so in some shots you'll have quite a bit on the left, while other shots are extra zoomed.

Thanks to random.next, there is now an auto alignment avisynth script that could help to create an AAP-AR movie!!!

Test example, Battlefield Earth (do not take in account the crossed frames, of course!):

Very cool proof of concept. Smile

Though some kind of basic interpolation at the edges would probably be a good thing (maybe add some of your special subtitle black bars for those who want it to be black).

That scene where one of the sources is jaggily zooming out while the other is still ... pretty hilarious to watch. Big Grin

The Matrix

(there is an "hiccup", because it was difficult to understand for the script what to do for few frames)

EDIT: doing some tests; apart the first scene, up until the policeman light zoom, where the plugin is fooled by difficult situations, the rest - let's say from around frame 2000 to 17000 - is simply perfect! Thinking about a real Matrix AAP-AR edition!!!

This is a tool I've been theorizing about for years.
I already love this place.

X files is on my list of projects, as well as the Star Wars Blu-ray’s.
Some details are on the Blu-ray in terms of lighting that aren’t on a different source I’ve obtained.
I’d like to mix some elements to see what I could build.
