Yeah, it would be great if there was a way to do a full lossless recording with a capture card or something.

It's probably possible with a HDMI splitter and some capture card, but again, I've never done it so I don't know Smile

I've ripped from Netflix before using my Bluray player and said HDMI splitter, but I don't know why, these chinese splitters die on me very quickly.

The Blu-ray (as we all know by now) suffers from severe digital noise reduction (DNR) and artificial sharpening. The Netflix version, however, seems to have no DNR or artificial sharpening.

Here are the links. For some reason screenshotcomparison.com would only let me upload two comparisons at a time, so here are 6 links for all 12 comparisons:

Again, does anyone know of a decent way to capture a movie from Netflix at full quality? This would be the perfect chance to preserve this version of The Fellowship of the Ring, as it's not available elsewhere, and it will eventually be removed from Netflix.

Nice, it's a noticeable improvement. Can't help you with details of Netflix capture sorry, I've never done it. Zoidberg has, maybe he could chime in.

Is the movie available in 4K or only 1080p?

It's just 1080p. Still a vast improvement though! And that would be awesome if Zoidberg could chime in! Smile

That would be awesome if you could try capturing it, Colek. Hopefully it is on Polish Netflix too!

I have an HDMI splitter that I tried to use with a borrowed Blackmagic Ultrastudio Express for a similar project a couple of years ago, but I could never get it to work right. There was a framerate issue that made the video longer than it was supposed to be; and as a result, the audio got increasingly out of sync over time. But hopefully there's another capture card that doesn't have this same issue. I'm just not sure which one it would be.... Obviously it would be best if it could be captured in its native framerate, so I could then easily sync it to the Blu-ray audio.

Update on FlixGrab: I just purchased it, but the highest quality it can do is 480p. Seems like either FlixGrab was dishonest about being able to capture in 1080p, or Netflix has figured out a way to block 1080p capturing. Not sure which. But I am disappointed that 480p is the highest it can do. Sad

Update 2 on FlixGrab: After further investigating, I have figured out that some 1080p content is ONLY available via Microsoft Edge (as far as internet browsers go). In Chrome, for example, certain films can only be viewed in 480p; but those same films can be streamed in 1080p when using Edge. FOTR is one of those films. It streams in HD in Edge, but only 480p in Chrome. So this leads me to believe that FlixGrab has the same limitations as Chrome. Only certain content (such as the Netflix originals) can be captured in 1080p. But movies like FOTR cannot. Lame.

That sucks big time, but might be possible to work around by the developers if they care enough. Browser detection can sometimes be faked.

I'd definitely let them know about it including all the details, like URLs etc.

For my captures I use an Avermedia LGP Lite with a software patch that removes HDCP (so no splitter). My cable box runs the Netflix app and can output 24p, which the LGP Lite can natively capture (so no pulldown or dropped frames). It encodes the HDMI stream to high bitrate h.264 which is then recorded to PC via USB2.0 so it's not particularly resource intensive but is not a standalone device. The resultant h.264 file is basically so transparent to the source as to be lossless, but it has to be transcoded again for blu ray compliance etc.
