[Idea] LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring Netflix Rip.
#1
I just noticed that The Fellowship of the Ring (theatrical version) was recently added to Netflix (USA). I scrubbed through it and it appears to be a VAST improvement over the theatrical Blu-ray! There doesn't appear to be as much of the ugly DNR. The grain feels much more natural. Does anyone know how to do a full 1080p capture of a movie on Netflix? If so, this would be a good one to capture and preserve!!

Interested as well. Though if it's an obviously different master, it will probably end up on 4K blu-ray. Do you have some screenshots to compare the versions?

I don't have any screenshots. I can probably take the time to do some later today or tomorrow after work, though.

Ok! I finally took a dozen screenshots for comparison. The new Netflix version looks SO MUCH better than the Blu-ray. The Blu-ray (as we all know by now) suffers from severe digital noise reduction (DNR) and artificial sharpening. The Netflix version, however, seems to have no DNR or artificial sharpening.

Here are the links. For some reason screenshotcomparison.com would only let me upload two comparisons at a time, so here are 6 links for all 12 comparisons:

Link 2: http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/130350
Link 3: http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/130351

Link 5: http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/130353

Again, does anyone know of a decent way to capture a movie from Netflix at full quality? This would be the perfect chance to preserve this version of The Fellowship of the Ring, as it's not available elsewhere, and it will eventually be removed from Netflix.

Hey Feallan, I just replied to your post above (but I forgot to click "reply" to you). Check the post above if you want to look at the screenshots! Smile

I'd be really interested in this too. I wish I had something to contribute on the technical aspects of capturing. Sad

Flixgrab software apperantly is able to rip Netflix shows, but they are not loseless according to what I've read (both video and audio are transcoded).

Yeah, it would be great if there was a way to do a full lossless recording with a capture card or something. But that seems pretty cool! I hadn't heart of Flixgrab until now. I had heard of PlayOn, but the quality of those recordings is terrible, and only 720p. Flixgrab looks like it'd at least be an improvement over PlayOn.

Nice, it's a noticeable improvement. Can't help you with details of Netflix capture sorry, I've never done it. Zoidberg has, maybe he could chime in.

Is the movie available in 4K or only 1080p?

If I can find time between ripping my Laserdiscs, I could do that if it's available on Polish Netflix.
