Indeed, as there is a BD with the same aspect ratio of 1.78:1

This Russian video is actually 1.33:1, but on our modern TVs, I wouldn't watch that when a widescreen HD version exists and is closer to the intended ratio. I can see the kick one can have out of an open matte for an otherwise 2.35:1 movie, that's indeed a cool bonus version to have, but for a 1.85:1, having an "open matte" up to 1.78:1 is the maximum for our modern TVs and it doesn't change very much the feel of a movie anyway.

Now, Stamper, if you want to color correct the Blu-ray using that Russian video as a source, I am interested, as it does look more like film unlike the HD master that is plagued with the usual red push. Otherwise, I'm no longer interested in that project.

OK I kept searching and found more, though still in the SD space.

Most releases of the film are all sourced from the old HD master but there is an old, German uncut DVD (there was a previous censored german DVD) with a different telecine that is even more interesting, it has a 1.75:1 framing that is more opened on top and bottom, but also on the sides. (the HD is 1.77:1).

Surprise, it also sports a very "teal" look, that in my eyes look even better than the open matte 35 film print scan.

I will scout amazon.de to buy a copy.

What I may do is sync both these copies to the original Dolby Stereo soundtracks which I will need to buy, the loosless english one from the new Olive Blu-ray, the french one from the Canadian 2 disc SE edition and any other that will come my way, to make for a variant package.

Color matching the HD version to the German DVD might be insteresting.

Top is the BD, below is the german alternate DVD master. See how the blue background has turned to grey in the HD version, how the teal is just plain green, and how soft the contrast is. Of course being a DVD it's far from perfect, but it looks filmic without the beige tint that seems to cover the whole film.

Here's more comparison. I seem to remember the general tone of the studio scenes being orange, not red and not as subdued as the BD which is very soft. The colors were wild. Though the director comes from TV, they did stylised the look of the film, the Director of Photography is Thomas Del Ruth who did Breakfast Club and Stand By Me.

Did you ever get anywhere with this Stamper? My top Arnie movie and in my top five of all time so would love to see a restored version or even have a 35mm print scanned in the future.

I left it as is, as for now a 2160p stream has appeared with a fantastic new scan!

Paramount did a 4k HDR scan a while back, and has been on iTunes since at least the past year or so. Olive Films (who put out the last BD) are not really doing much these days and probably won't renew their licences, so Paramount might go through with a eventual UHD unless management changes their mind again.

Also, I hear the Olive Blu has what seems to be the original Dolby Stereo mix (in DTS-MA 2.0). Artisan did a 5.1 remix (using the DME stems and OST with some other modern SFX added in) during the DVD gold rush days. This is the 5.1 track used on several other releases and is the basis for that 7.1 mix on the Lionsgate/Maple Pictures BD.

Do you know if the UK Fabulous Films 2.0 track is the original mix?

The 2.0 on the UK Blu should be the same source that was on Olive's BD.

I just watched this on LD this week and it's a stunning looking disc (letterbox remaster) but sadly the Dolby stereo while sounding fine doesn't have the center always firmly locked so the dialogue bleeds everywhere.
