Dawn of the Dead Regrade (35 Project #3 v1.13)

This is part of my 35 Project:

https://fanrestore.com/thread-1741.html

Trying to regrade films to look more like their theatrical prints

Project Info:

So long story short I was poking around youtube doing some research and found this trailer for Dawn of the Dead:

Now I'm not in anyway claiming this is theatrical accurate but I just loved the cool color timing and the 35mm film look. I noticed a few other trailers for DOTD have the same cooler/blue look but less extreme over the JPN trailer so for a final product I'd pare that look down with less green and saturation (but still plenty of green there).

In addition, I tried to remove some of the BD's EE/halos and fix some grain DNR

Note: synced to the Anchor Bay BD

Video:
US Anchor Bay Blu-Ray regraded to various 35mm trailers

Audio:
1. PCM 2.0 Mono (from the Full Screen/Open Matte Laserdisc)
2. DD/AC-3 2.0 Mono (from the AB BD)

Thanks:
Zoidberg - for the AB 2.0 AC3 mono
Doombot - for the LD PCM
bronan - for the PCM sync

Definitely interested, fan of the film and your palette looks nice! But, wouldn't use the Anchor Bay transfer. Despite its flaws, the IT BD's new 4K restoration looks pretty good, seconded by the JP BD.

Sadly, I only have the AB at the moment.

How are the other two better? Sharper, more grain? Maybe I can find one...

Also thanks Doom and Appleandrice

Not a fan. It looks like the typical 'blanket teal' that all the classics get when they're 'remastered' on blu-ray. It's too 'cool' now. Original is too warm as well. I think the right balance is somewhere between your screencaps.

Fair enough. I can understand it not being someone thing as it is pushed a bit. But as a counterpoint this is just a fun one off, something in-between other projects and those aren't the final colors.

I guess also to add to my to find list, does anyone have the Japanese cam?

The Japanese is not in the comparison, but the Italian is...

The Italian already seems to be a bit cooler.

Luckily not as bad as the first German DVD of the European cut: 🔍http://sd.caps-a-holic.com/vergleich.php?vergleichID=34

I like the more contrast and colors of the regrade; maybe I'd raise just a bit the saturation, and reduce the brightness and cyan level - because I do hate magenta sky, but that cyan one hurts my eyes, I needed sunglasses! Tongue

I'd agree with Tyler in that somewhere in between would probably look best, either way it's an improvement on the blu-ray colours.
