UHD BD to BD?

The thought had crossed my mind Smile
Having an accurate hardware conversion would definitely be desirable and would probably be very helpful in 'tuning' software-based conversions.

Yeah, I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between a *DV-assisted* hardware conversion and one made by RipBot264.

Well here are some pics from Blade Runner I did using the hardware conversion of a UHD player to down-convert to 1080p and SDR. If anyone has that rip.

And I have a few movies in Itunes that got upgraded to 4K. I can grab Matrix, T2, Mummy, Star Trek 2009 and Dark Knight (1080p with SDR conversion):

Compared to Beber's pics from a few pages ago:

Not as pinkish/orangy/salmony skintones as with MadVR and a bit brighter. OK, now that I've tested a few clips, I'm adopting this new toy.

Great! I take it that the player is using the DV metadata to guide the conversion.

From the Batman comparison, it seems that the hardware conversion looks the best. RipBot264 does better than madVR when it comes to color but looks brighter than the hardware conversion.

Sorry BR isn't DV just HDR10. I just posted those as a base comparisons but if I can get a DV disc I do the same with a friends UHD player.

Actually many of the Itunes copies are DV so let me check those also.

I might be able to get 2049 in HDR10 down-converted to 1080p/SDR from a UHD player and the Itunes DV down-converted to 1080p/SDR to compare.

^ Ah, okay. It was a DV-enabled conversion to SDR that zoidberg and I were most interested in, but I'm sure one will turn up. ☺

BR in UHD looks better than the old FC BD. It's a better starting point for a fan project.

I'll get a comparison, don't worry. I got an idea...

I have Blade Runner UHD, too. I can convert a clip with RipBot264. I'll just select a 2-minute clip that pans at least 2 scenes and we'll see what comes out of it.
Regarding the brighter look when using RipBot264, there is a setting for brightness, contrast, saturation and hue. So if this is an issue, the soft can address that. I just made quick tests with the default settings. I only tried some tweaking with Starship Troopers.

Here's Blade Runner Final Cut:

MadVR / RipBot264 / RipBot 264 with a bit less brightness and a bit more saturation

I suppose it could use some contrast reduction so that the light going through the window would not appear as blown and better detailed as in the MadVR conversion.

Also you need to check that the nits value for the downconversion is the same for madvr/ripbot
