Cool stuff. So the device/player you use plays the 4K file at 1080p? Or does it play the 1080p instead? Because the 1080p iTunes thingies aren't very impressive sadly.

If it's the 4K @ 1080p, nothing is lost I think. I doubt they have bitrates that justify 4K in any way, similar to Netflix and Youtube.

Yeah it is the 4K master streaming then downscaled:

AppleTV (2160p/23.976) -> Scaler (1080p/23.976) -> HDCP Stripper -> Cap Card

In the end 4K or not, its still a stream so mileage may vary but I think it doesn't look too, too bad...

Overall I really like the grading on the 4k master.
With nothing to do with PDB's project at hand, I have a query.
What bothers me is the opening (helicopter, beach, General Phillips talking to Dutch out side the beach hut) at sunset.
It was a golden color and not the blue grade we see in the screenshot.
Does anybody know what it looked like on it's theatre run?
I watched it on it first run on VHS in the U.K.

I watched Predator in 35mm during a movie marathon recently, I posted about it here (ramble alert):

I was going to post in the Predator colour timing thread but never got round to it. CSchmiddlap is correct to say it has a golden/amber tone during the opening sequence and pretty much all daylight scenes. The predominant colours in the jungle are green, yellow and brown, while skintones go between orange and brown. I was genuinely taken aback at how it looked.

So generally the whole film was a warmer grade. I gather what we have now is a scan of the negative without the original color timing applied, much like Mad Max 2.
Is there a laserdisc / DVD with the theatrical timing? I remember a discussion about it but don't remember the outcome.
I'm just glad we have the new master not scrubbed to hell! I stayed with the original Blu-ray release because of this.

As this is a cap rather than direct download surely the colours are not 100% accurate to the original stream due to the hdmi capture cards own colour/brightness settings, I know mine changes them slightly.

@CSchmidlapp @zoidberg: this definitely doesn't have that yellow/warm sunset like zoid describes or like the VHS spoRv posted in the pred color thread. Overall I would say this is green/blue/yellow with orange or yellowish skin tones. Especially when compared to the 2008 BD which is very red.

The pics on the first page do accurately show this master looking bluer but it is also very much more yellow then the 2008.

I checked the US DVD and it's the same transfer as the 2008 BD. I don't have the later DNR'd BD to compare that. I assume it's similar to this master but I don't know. Sadly, I got rid of that LD a long time ago so can't compare that either.

@X5gb: I wouldn't worry about any color differences. I went through great efforts to watch the original stream and this copy on the same monitor and TVs (same settings) to make my chain didn't add any bias. Besides I don't think any amount of color changes would cause a warmsunset to turn into a blue sky, that's just the master.
