Top Gun was rescanned in 4K recently for this 4K UHD according to https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=26754 And we get Atmos! Smile

Sounds promising!

I guess that's what sells.

I'm struggling to find any catalogue 4K titles from Paramount other than Grease. That one did have the faithful 6-track-derived mix, so I guess it's not outside the realm of possibility they might do that with this release too.

The Mission Impossible and Jack Ryan films have the original 5.1 mixes. Original might be questionable though

As long as the original Paramount Logo is intact on the 4K release of Top Gun, syncing the Original Dolby Surround 2.0 Mix from the Laserdisc or the 1998 and 2005 DVD's should be a breeze. I recently synced the Original Dolby Surround Mix of Days Of Thunder to a 4K Webrip of the new Transfer of Days Of Thunder, and i'm happy with the results!

Paramount did a 4k scan of the OCN in 2010 and was the basis for the the 2012 3D re-release. The 3D version and current 2D streaming master were finished in 2k at the time and I doubt Paramount would give us a messy upscale of those in 4k. Also worth noting that the 3D/ 2D streaming version not only changes the Paramount logo at the head and tail, but they also digitally redid some of the credits and on-screen texts, as well an addition of restoration credits at the end.

For this upcoming 4k presentation, I'm certain Paramount went back to the raw 2010 4k source scan and this time had done all the restoration and timing work along with a HDR/DV pass in native 4k. I'm also certain the original Paramount logos + on-screen/credits will be restored since it's a new restoration (and OCN probably have them textless to begin with, explaining the 3D's changes, and a lot of the time they'll source original credits and texts from an IP)

No it won't, it will be 1.78:1 Open Matte so a half way house you could say between the 2.35:1 bluray /2:1 original flipside dvd (which in my eyes both had very tight framing) and the 4:3 flipside fullscreen dvd, a very good compromise. Remember the 4:3 is slightly cropped on the sides where this isn't, and during the non aerial flying scenes the fullscreen has way to much headroom anyway. As already mentioned maybe spoRv could create one of his alternate hybrid 4:3 (IMAX look) or UAR for the flying scenes alone using a mixture of both AMZN and dvd fullscreen in auto overlay and have a switching aspect ratio faux IMAX version.

Dvdmike,

Yes, it does have the new color timing but it will be tweaked to be more natural by PDB, no DNR and any compression artifacts in the AMZN due to the grain will be minimised again by PDB.

Okay your open mate does have new color timing but grain has been left intact but my question is: Will Paramount leave the grain on the 4K remaster they pushing out in a couple of weeks or do the same Top Gun they every other 4K remaster they did in the past and add the dreaded DNR To it.? Who knows? (BTW:That a serious question. Sorry to bring up newer remasters here to a open mate Preservation Thread. But after Paramount’s 1st Blu-ray disaster with this movie and The better 3D Transfer I’m a bit worried for the 3rd remaster.) Stay safe.
Edit: I did read some of the posts on here that Paramount (How many times do I to write that name) Already did a 4K scan back in 2010 so it might be the 3D master (or a better Version of it) but with HDR 10 but what may piss you off both remastered and 4K discs have the dreaded Dolby Atmos Mix. (Whelp all the more reason to get the older discs to sync up audio.) Seriously Paramout Pictures why can’t you include the original Dolby Stereo mix?
2nd edit: Confused Someone beat me to the punch again about the Dolby Amtos mix. ( Oh well! Smile better luck next time)

Paramount's recent 4k HDR remasters such as Days of Thunder and the Beverly Hills Cop movies look stunning gorgeous and grainy, so we should be in good hands if they did indeed go back to Top Gun's raw 4k scan and worked from there. Some 4k Paramount transfers have seen partial degraining, but that's only for shots that A: were shot with poor lighting and focus and processed on grainy stock; B: are VFX composites that are several generations from their original elements or CG shots with baked in analog artifacts; or C: probably come from later gen source like a archival print due to the sections on the OCN missing or too damaged to transfer.

Paramount's raw scan of the OCN is 4k, but the 3D master they created with all it's alterations and whatnot was definitely finished in 2k, as 4k workflows were not commonplace until a few years later. I'm also certain Paramount went back to the raw scan and did a 4k workflow + HDR pass there as the 3D master is 2k, and there's no way they'd shovel out a messy upscale with a overcooked SDR>HDR upconversion like Emperior Mouse did to the Star Wars prequels.

So that’s what the DNR was for. Well played Paramount for using different sources to fill-in damage parts to the OCN. As for badly done compositing/ badly lit and shot Footage I can understand. (As long as it’s reasonable. Hello Predator UHE) Despite the BHC Trilogy being on Standard Blu-ray right now I might just pick them up to the original releases. The original BHC was only released the one to be released here in the US As the rest of the trilogy was released worldwide. (I have the Original UK Blu-ray for 2 & 3.) The original HD transfers looked OK to me but I might compare the videos of all 3 films.
But I did see your comment about the 2010 4K scanning of Top Gun’s OCN, If they do a good job with the new remaster than we have a winner. As I am typing this the remastered disc as well 4K are due out in 2 weeks in the US so we may have the new color timing and Amtos but video Better great or Paramount is going pay. (Something worse then Goose)
