[Request] Rocky Horror faux stereo
#21
FYI, the version on Vudu as well as on Amazon Video and Itunes (last I saw about 3 years ago) should be the 2001 restoration used for the DVD, but in native HD. Easiest way to tell is the noticeable wobble, scratches/dirt/debis, and prominent EE that is lacking on the 2010 BD (which was said to be one of Fox's earlier 4k restorations to hit the format). I imagine between the 2001 HD master and the 4k BD source there's also drastic color and framing differences that many have not noted yet or should.

As I'm having a pretty quiet Easter, I'm capturing the 1992 Laserdisc audio today.

There's a copy of the uncut Japanese LD on the the LDDB shop for $30 bucks, or best offer. If anyone wants to fund the purchase, I could capture that too and we would have the audio for Super Heroes.

Gave my capture a listen to today. I think I like the stereo mix! (Haven't watched the LD version in years.) Some clear differences from the 5.1 DVD mix. Best example I can mention is the chorus in Frankenstein Place, which is hard to hear in the 5.1, is clear as a bell here. The rain also has a strong stereo presence without overwhelming the vocals.

Hot Patootie didn't seem to have the same oomph as the original mono, but I can't say for sure without doing a side by side listen. Eddie's motorcycle gets some audio pans as he's riding around. If this is a "fake" mix, they did a good job with it. Mind you I think I only have one LD marked with "Chace Surround" and that is Wizards, but it seems to just spread the audio around without any true separation.

I apologize for the bump, but I just read according to IMDB Rocky Horror had a 4 track stereo mix. It's been said the movie was initially released in mono, but I imagine there was a late 70s reissue print that had this mix. According to the article Stamper linked for the first page of this topic, Chace only did their work for the 5.1 mix used for the DVD (as well as the 2000 theatrical re-release) and didn't say much about the early 80s remix supposedly done for video. I speculate the LD SilverWook has is the 4-track reissue mix which explains why it doesn't have the bugs and mixing issues home video mixes tend to have.

Would be cool to have the original Stereo track, if that is indeed what the LD Wook has is. I personally don't know much about the Stereo track, mostly the Mono.

I'm glad I found this thread. I still have my old VHS copy and never got around to upgrading it. NEARLY got the Blu-ray a couple days ago, and I'm glad I hesitated..
My VHS is the first original home video release (1990) and marked 'stereo'. No, I didn't pay the $90 for which it retailed.
And I just checked it and it is stereo, not dual mono.

I’d be interested in getting my hands on the stereo mix, too. The old ‘90s VHS was my intro to RHPS, but it’s damn near impossible to see that version at this point, now that I no longer have a VCR.

I got the opportunity to watch some of the Blu-ray tonight. I got as far as the wedding at the beginning and had to stop. The surround channels are too loud with crowd noise that sounds like it was recorded indoors instead of outdoors. And then there are the birds in the rear that might actually be louder than the dialog.
It's a pretty crap mix. With all the releases over the years, why haven't they tried to fix this?

Is there a good source for the old stereo track or do you guys need me to rip the VHS tape?
Edit: Which of course doesn't help with the extra scenes in the UK cut or the redubbed singing for Rocky. Hmmm.
I guess maybe the mono track is the ideal version unless someone wants to remix this themselves from available versions.

You know, all these years, I didn't even know until now that the film was recut for the US market. Makes sense though, because it's depressing as hell at the end but apparently they wanted to leave you in a good mood instead, hence the alternate credits and shortening Superheroes.

The UK Blu-ray has both versions but I dunno about the US one. I'm just checking my copy now to see what audio's on it because Blu-ray.com seems to be under the impression it has a 2.0 track but doesn't specify on which version or whether it's mono or stereo (or Dolby Surround), and the box simply says 7.1 with no mention of anything else.

The LaserDiscs are a bit all over the place but as far as I can tell, most of them have the plain stereo audio dubbed in from the soundtrack (as in, CD soundtrack, with alternate takes of vocals and so on). The UK one, which I thought I had but apparently don't, seemingly has a Dolby Stereo/Surround track rather than the mono, it looks like that's on both the digital and analogue so probably no hope of the original mono on analogue left or whatever. Still, I really want the UK LD now.

I have a German LD en route at the moment, but I have no idea if it's cut or not (listed as 95 mins, which is obfuscated slightly by PAL speedup and the actual runtime is almost-but-not-quite 100 mins so they could either be rounding up or rounding down) and there's zero info about the audio except that the back says "Diser Kultfilm in original englischer Fassung (man versteht ihn trotzdem!!)" - so it's English, but probably not Dolby Surround (since there's no Dolby Surround logo on the packaging), and may or may not be analogue only (since there's no mention of digital sound either). I'm wondering if it might be digital mono or plain stereo given that LaserDisc supposedly hinted at digital sound in European markets as opposed to LaserVision which tended to mean analogue, plus it's quite late really (1991), so it'd strike me as odd for it to be analogue only, but you never know.
