At Tribeca, “Apocalypse Now” – 40th Anniversary & Restoration


Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now” will celebrate its 40th Anniversary at the Festival with a screening of a new, never-before-seen restored version of the film, entitled “Apocalypse Now: Final Cut.” Remastered from the original negative in 4K Ultra HD, the film will be brought to life with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, delivering spectacular colors and highlights that are up to 40 times brighter and blacks that are 10 times darker, and Dolby Atmos, producing moving audio that flows all around you with breathtaking realism. The Beacon Theatre will also be outfitted for this exclusive occasion with Meyer VLFC (Very Low Frequency Control), a ground-breaking loudspeaker system engineered to output audio frequencies below the limits of human hearing, giving the audience a truly visceral experience.


After the Screening: An evening with Francis Ford Coppola who will reflect on the film and discuss its elaborate restoration.

When I saw Storaro's own 35mm print that he stores at the Italian cinematheque of the Redux cut at the French Cinémathèque last year, he basically said that the original negative now longer existed and was replaced by the Redux one... In the story he told us, as he was there as a guest of the Cinémathèque, was that Coppola was a bit shocked by this, but that Storaro's asked Francis which version he would want people to see, and since Francis answered the Redux cut, that there was no need to worry about the original negative of the original cut anyway. That makes you wonder...

The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival (4.24 — 5.5) will offer a whoop-dee-doo gala presentation of the 40th anniversary of Francis Coppola’s Apocalypse Now at the Beacon Theatre. Great — but the people behind this are misleading audiences by calling it Apocalypse Now: Final Cut.

No new footage, nothing to do with re-editing or extra bells and whistles — it’s strictly a technical upgrade thing. “Remastered in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos from a 4K scan of the original negative,” etc

Both cuts is probably restored, there is no reason to doubt about that.

Francis Ford Coppola shot nearly 200 hours of footage.
But can we hope to get this time more restored deleted / unused scenes?

Jeeezzz let it rest! The film was perfect as it was.
The Redux is ruined by the french plantation scene which was only included because it Premiered at Cannes.
I say Redux without that scene and you have a great SE.
I was thinking of excising it using TSmuxer, retaining everything else without reencoding.

I would be even happy with just the helicopter "This is the End" scene, absolutely love that bit and could watch it over and over with the surround sound playing tricks with my ears.

I prefer the Redux, personally. When I see now the original theatrical cut, I feel Willard gets to Kurtz way too soon. I prefer having the building-up, the mystery surrounding the guy.
