Apocalypse Now: Final Cut 40th Anniversary & Restoration

Apocalypse Now Workprint

Hello R/movies! For the past 5 years I have been working on digitizing the Apocalypse Now Workprint and editing in parts from the Theatrical and Redux editions in where the missing scenes are to create a more, heavy-handed, anti-war film that creates ambiguity about what one has seen and how it changes a person and changes their view on the world. My friend, lets call him Jeffery, along with his father and I put this all together. Jeffery’s father was a film tech on the set in the Philippines and he and his boss somehow copied the 35mm workprint onto 16mm reels and brought them back stateside. The film he copied was not complete and thus there are Scene Missing cards and parts of the original film that are missing such as the final shot and the overdubs and narration. Jeffery, his father and I got to this rough 330-minute cut. Last spring Jeffery and his father were killed in a car crash on their way back from visiting family in Oregon. I was mainly the organizer and kept everyone on schedule while Jeffery and his father were skilled in audio and video mixing and editing. This is more a plea for help than a completed project. It is so close yet so far away. At least 50 minutes need to be edited in with sound mixing and an intermission roughly around the Do-Lung Bridge section. This might seem like a long shot but is there anyone who can help me finish this mammoth? All the missing scenes and missing parts are bolded.

Tl;dr: Been working on combining Apocalypse Now Workpirnt with sections and audio from the theatrical and redux editions. Got to 330 minutes before death of partners in car crash. Needs roughly 50 more minutes not including intermission. Need help badly to finish!!!

Notes are as follows

Edited: Here is a folder of photos of the map Coppola and his production team worked off of during the filming in the Philippines. http://imgur.com/a/wsZWp

Out of curiosity, how does the quality of the workprint you have compare to the one that's been circulating on the internet for god-knows-how-long? That one is old bootleg-VHS quality.

It is very very similar. It is a rough quality due to the fact that the film was not kept under the best conditions in the Philippines so the film is a bit foggy in some spots. We did the best we could to clear it up but it looks like a bootleg vhs so it is no where near high quality!

Well, this look like some guy trying to draw attention.

He probably just trying to remaster the available workprint.

The scene is full of people who just are in it to draw attention to themselves and their ego.

I mean, " Last spring Jeffery and his father were killed in a car crash on their way back from visiting family in Oregon."?

This comes after Coppola has locked Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, a version of the film that most pleases the storied director, and which will premiere at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival.

Coppola:
Later on, once again, when asked which version I personally wanted to be shown, I often felt that the original 1979 was too abruptly shortened, and Redux was too long, and settled on what I now felt was the perfect version, which is what we’re showing at Tribeca later this month, called Apocalypse Now Final Cut.”

I read online Coppola cut down the Redux. It means he deleted the plantation scene, added a bunch of small other stuff. This is going to be awesome.

He is doing the same thing as he did to fund Apocalypse Now by re-edit Godfather for TV.
But this time he picked up several movies...
And now he want to make his last Big-Budget Epic film ‘Megalopolis’.  WoW Happy

FC 183 minutes - Tribeca’s official site
https://www.tribecafilm.com/filmguide/ap...e-now-2019

Wells goes on by quoting a trust-worthy source who told him that at: “183 minutes means Final Cut is 19 minutes shorter than the 202-minute “Apocalypse Now: Redux” and 36 minutes longer than the original 70mm Ziegfeld version that ran 147 minutes. So Final Cut  will include the French plantation sequence — just not as much. And the rescuing the Playboy bunnies sequence — just not as much. And so on.”

My wishlist:
Monkey Sampan Scene (only boats segments, and of course without airplane tail)
Original ending - Destruction of Kurtz Compound

Agree. I have both original DVDs with the Destruction of Kurtz Compound so at worst we will be able to do a preserv.

I tried already, and syncing the credits on (they are separate from the footage) is a breeze. I just need to check if a Panup is possible for both discs.

It's already completely restored on BD.   Tongue

Destruction of the Kurtz Compound (HD; 6:06), the jettisoned final credits sequence which Coppola ultimately rejected when he feared audiences were misinterpreting it.

But it doesn't have the credits on it, right?

I'm not sure, but I think there was credits.

About BD:
Surprisingly, there is no option to view the destruction footage without the superimposed credits nor to hear the end credit score without Coppola's voice-over commentary. This is reason enough to hold on to the earlier DVD issues which featured the footage sans credits and allowed the viewer to turn off the commentary track (I'm fond of the six-minute end credit music cue and am a bit disappointed it can't be heard properly on this release).
