The only downside of going straight to MKV is you won't get the DV layer, if there is one.

Yeah, it could just have been the disc that I tried. I think there was something funky about the either the DTS-HD MA 7.1 or the properties of the video stream; even MKV output needed a remux to play smoothly in VLC, although MPV handled it fine.
EDIT: I can confirm that as long as MakeMKV is granted the required permissions, it can rip from the drive on Linux. Thanks given by: althor1138

Looks like DVDFab has decided that my LG BDXL drive is no longer compatible with Passkey. Just upgraded Passkey for the new Star Trek movie 1-4 UHDs, and although it worked with other UHDs before it just gave some popup about the firmware being incompatible. The taskbar icon is now greyed out, with "The drive is excluded from processing" displayed under info, and Passkey no longer tries to open any discs, UHD or otherwise (luckily I have another drive for regular BDs). The hacked firmware on my drive was an older version, but upgrading produced the same result (maybe sideloading a firmware for a different drive would work?)
But they so graciously will let you download "DVDFab UHD Drive Tool" to downgrade the supposedly incompatible firmware to make it backup-friendly. For $80. So pretty shady, I guess they decided that they wanted more money out of me after I paid for a lifetime license years ago. Should have just went with MakeMKV (thought it could only make MKVs back in the day), as even today they're still in "Beta" and will let you use the software for free, and of course it works just fine with my drive/firmware and UHDs. Guess I'll stick with MakeMKV for now, just hope I don't have to pay money again for something after buying a license for Passkey... Doesn't seem like MakeMKV will work when reading discs with ImgBurn, but not a big deal I guess. Thanks given by: bronan
