You'd be amazed how many electronics stores or wall of tv's within a department store had an LD player hidden in the corner to make all the tv's look good back in the 80's and well into the mid 90's, especially the rear projection sets. (But never actually sold LD players.) VHS really looked bad on larger screens. I took a perverse glee in asking the employees if the Laserdisc player was for sale.

I thought the standard BD included in the Shining 4k UHD combo pack is the 2007 disc? It has PCM 5.1 audio and a VC1 encode, which should indicate it being the original BD. But if Warner did indeed do a new disc with a SDR downconvert of the remaster (like with the 4k transfer of Unforgiven only available on regular BD within the UHD combo pack) it should have DTS-MA.

I don't know about the audio tracks, but the standard BD video is clearly from the new UHD master (I've also done a side-to-side comparison in VLC). In fact, if the color timing wasn't completely botched, it'd be a great 4K remaster.

That's some great trivia

There is no other explanation. But they are making DCPs for these films to be shown theatrically, I can't imagine these would have blowout/crush or mad colours. So why not use the DCP master for the first 1080p blus

Could check back on the audio tracks? Your new disc might have DTS-MA 5.1 instead of PCM like the 2007 release does. Would be very odd if Warner simply reused most of the 2007 discs audio tracks and contents but only swapped out the transfers. Hell, even the 4k remastered BD of 2001 has new DTS-MA 5.1 tracks (both 1999 remix and 70mm 6 track mixes) whereas the old disc had LPCM 5.1 of the remix.

I've checked: the only english track is DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1.
Polish, Spanish, Italian, French, German tracks are all AC3; the funny thing is, all tracks are 5.1, except the Italian track (my language), that's just 2.0. And that's very strange, 'cause I remember the DVD and old BD versions had Italian 5.1.

LD ac3 was I thought not always obtained by studios in the late 90's because they found they could skip paying for the license and thought no one would notice.
The new 1080p disc is indeed new but the conversion isn't quite right. At least it looks better than the 2007 disc. It's much better than the Batmans and Matrix 1080p downconverts.

While I agree it technically looks way better than the 2007 disc, and it's not a disaster like Batman, I'm still not sure I'd prefer watching the 1080p remaster over the old disc.
On a "cerebral" level, I can enjoy the added detail, the grain, the natural film-like image of the remaster; but on a "visceral" level, it just feels wrong. You're constantly aware that the colors should be more vivid, the scenes should be brighter; it's like watching a movie with a dying projector lamp. It's really frustrating, and even more distracting (to me) than an inferior transfer with some DNR.

I just can't get over how good the 4k UHD looks. It's like watching it for the first time.
