[Proposal] The Exorcist: The Version We've Almost Seen
#11
Your project would be very interesting! I don't know if you've finished, but I'd love to see the result!

Thanks for the interest! I'm sorry to say I've barely even started this one, too many other plates to spin at the moment. I do definitely want to come back to this though.

For now, I've finished a few and am about to hopefully complete another relatively simple one really soon, then I need to look at the lay of the land and figure out what to prioritise next.

So you can see what I mean, some recent/current stuff includes...

Millions of Voices (Star Wars fan restoration audio archive): ongoing, v3.0 awaiting new mixes being released by others

Near Dark preservation/remux: completed (although I'd like to make a menu and add the bonus content at some point...)

Anatomy of a Dewback aspect ratio correction (Star Wars: Special Edition featurette): completed (unless I change the colour space from BT.601 to BT.709 or something)

Snowpiercer preservation/remux: almost completed (just deciding whether there's any point in adding silence to the end of the audio stream or not)

ハチ公物語 translation (Japanese to English): in progress, very slow because my Japanese isn't anywhere near fluent and I'm being very picky about accuracy as usual

Raiders of the Lost Ark audio restoration/resync: in progress, also slow because many sources that don't match up well with each other and my audio editing skills are rusty

I've kept an eye on this thread, and I'm looking forward to this if you ever get back to it. I personally also like many of the additions in the extended cut (even the ending to some degree), and this idea might be the best the film could be.
Finest kind.

The delay on this one is partly by design: I knew I couldn't achieve the kind of result I want so I left it until I felt I was more capable. I'm still not where I want to be yet but I'm working on that.

Three main areas I think need some focus for me to do this any kind of justice at all are:

  1. Colour grading / matching (for both the reinserted 35 mm footage for the optical shot at the end, and the extended scenes being added since they're from the extremely tinted Blu-ray). This side of things is something I've admired your work for; I've messed about with some stuff (notably Halloween) in Resolve but nothing sophisticated at all and what I ended up releasing was nowhere near what I wanted it to look like. I just don't really know enough to fully understand how to achieve what I'm seeing in my head.

  2. Cleanup for the 35 mm stuff to match it better with the Blu-ray source (never going to be seamless but right now I think the difference is a lot starker than it potentially could be) - this might involved me learning a bunch of new software. Ideally I'd love to run this through something like Neat Video but I don't even know where to start with that sort of thing as yet.

  3. Audio editing / blending; I've so far focused more on very very basic edits and bitstream tweaking for sync, and learning about the encoding / technical side more than actually doing the proper editing work. I have some experience editing audio but all that knowledge is years old and very rusty indeed. Again, I have some software but it's probably not the best stuff to be using and I don't really trust myself to get things right; the last thing I want to do is release it and it's a mess so I have to redo it all anyway.
Basically, I think it might be best to focus on one of the many much simpler projects I've got going on and once I've cleared the slate a bit and polished some skills I'll come back to this and try to do it properly!

Anyway, it's good to hear that there is interest in this, so thank you for letting me know. And I am sorry I haven't made more progress, but I guess it's better to do it right.

Any progress on this? I'm quite interested as the blu ray releases with they're weird tinting and sound effects have driven me to stick with my 1998 dvd.
