I think we need a thread were to post random thoughts about our projects - future, past, in progress - without cluttering the eventual proper threads... a place also to ask for opinion, throw ideas... so, if something would not be actually used in this or that project, it will stay only here!

I start: lately I'm thinking to put apart color regrading, you know, just to change something, and continue with open matte - as it seems there is some interest in this, apart from me, obviously!

Some projects in the drawer are almost ready, but they are too... easy so I wanted something more challenging... there are, of course, open matte DVDs that were (and will be) upscaled to HD, but there are other sources that still need a good upscale; I'm thinking about several 720p, that could benefit of a bit of cleaning...

So, here you are my last attempt; Deep Rising open matte 720p, and BD screenshots from blu-ray.com:

Here you can see that enhanced version is almost on par with Blu-ray (maybe due to downscaled BD image; further tests are needed)

Here, at the contrary, the Blu-ray it's quite better, in particular if you zoom in to see better the details; but this is expected in a shot like this, with all these tiny particulars that are lost in the source due lower resolution and bitrate; but make a comparison between the untouched and the enhanced; Avisynth doesn't stop to amaze me everytime!

Would the Reservoir Dogs Blu-ray be a good source of luma for a black-and-white version, or would I need to upscale a DVD?

Made the overlap using HDTV and WEBdl of POTC 1; well, I made a comparison with and without using a denoise filter, and the result is really really close - difficult to discern even at 5x zoom... so, I can say that I would NOT use a denoise filter, first because it isn't needed, second it could always cause some detail loss, and, last but not least, encoding time would be greatly reduced not using it!

Terminator 3 HDTV MPEG-2 at 11.4mpbs average bitrate (14.2mbps max) is pretty identical to HDTV AVC at 15mbps - even when grealy magnified... it's a great example of good compression, I wonder which encoder they used - note: it's 23.976fps, a bit strange for an MPEG-2 HDTV recording, though.

I have a Pal version of the original DVD/LD master. If anyone could get the original NTSC master DVD, I would fancy trying to see if they match to produce a 720p version blending both of them.

No use getting the Blu-ray and color matching, they suck and are DNred.

Apparently the DVD is the same master with a better resolution and even more image (though it reveals some damage).
I will try to locate the french version so that I get the original french mix (the other one I have is the UK disc with Dolby Surround mix I think)

If it's the first UK EiV release then it will have the Dolby Pro-Logic surround track, probably at 256kB/s if their other releases are anything to go by.

I think there are three DVD versions of the early Criterion master

- US flip disc from 1997
- UK dual layer with Pro Logic surround track it's listed as 448kbps in VLC
- FR dual layer which was apparently 16/9 and issued one year prior the Deluxe Edition remaster. Maybe it was an upscale?

I just have the UK one, FR I will hunt some used shops for one, they are probably everywhere for 2 bucks apiece.
