Rambo trilogy original mixes & color timing
#41
I just watched Rambo: First Blood Part 2 2018 remastered, and I can't believe how much Studio Canal can screw up every time. When they had real blacks and real whites, they couldn't have them the next time, they seem to never be able to center inscriptions; it's either too much on the left or too much on the right, and now they even show thick black borders on the right. Who supervises their quality control, if any? Has there been an exchange program for fixed versions of their screw ups? 'Cause Rambo III is also an off-center fest.

Here's for Rambo III. How did they not notice they didn't center the framing correctly? It's so obvious to the naked eye.

It's bizarre how they also fixed some things in the new scan and thus they're more natural and better detailed but then fubard other color aspects amongst many other things. Oh wait that's right that because ti was L'Immagine Ritrovata the same "restoration" house that screwed over the Leone titles, messed up the color of the 4K ABT, 4K Bruce Lee films and many others....
As soon as I saw the caps of the 4Ks with the teal in First Blood and saw their name I said "heck no" and found the original better encoded than US discs German trilogy BD set.

So you have to choose between a bit overprocessed but well balanced for homes vs. better and newer scan with fuabrd color and framing.

From the BDs, but it's the same on UHD.

They just found the original music tracks fairly recently, I'm hoping they'll find the rest someday.

I had no idea.

EDIT I own the original DVD NTSC releases, so I'm going to A/B the Dolby Surround mixes to see if they match the one on the Blu-rays.

It looks like the UHD have only the 5.1 remixes (and they suck)

Are the Dolby Surround mixes on the DVDs the same as the Blu-rays?

Also does anyone know if the video transfer and 2.0 mixes are the same between the original 1998 Artisan DVDs and the later Special Edition Artisan DVDs?

No, the early DVDs are LDs ports. The later are already SC remasters.

I didn't get the UHDs because they lacked the original mixes, which can be found on the German regular BD versions.

So in the DVDbeaver page you linked to before there are the Lionsgate DVDs which look like different remaster. Is this the SC remaster you are referring to?

What about the Artisan Special Edition? It added a DD & DTS 5.1, but is the 2.0 the same as the original 1998 DVD?

Yes as SC is the right owner through the Carolco buy. The early DVDs masters predate the buying I think.

As far as I know, the 2.0 on the remasters should be the same, though they are probably doctored by the wizards at SC. They sound unspectacular.

At least with the first three released LD ports, you know you're getting zero SC intereference.

Yeah its reeeally confusing between the DVD releases.

So what DVDBeaver refers to as "Lionsgate Special Edition" is the same as the "Artisan Special Edition" on DVDCompare going by the listed extras.

Looking at the comparison screenshots, the Artisan SE has the newer remaster which all the later BDs are based on. And only the original 1998 DVDs has the brighter image and different colours, which is the same transfer as the LDs.

I personally like the look of the 1998 DVDs but I don't know if they're accurate. Doesn't look like they are easy to find for cheap these days either Sad

The 4K remasters has all sorts of problems so I'm going to skip that.
