Still plugging away on this. Lost motivation recently (wonder why?) but now back to work on this. I was able to squeeze a little more detail out of the HDTVs but I decided to go against what I said previously and try to overlay the BD on top of the OM HDTV. Tentatively, I've about 80% of the BD's luma aligned. So hopefully there should be a slight bump in resolution in the final project if I'm satisfied with my work.

Mention of a blu-ray overlay hybrid has me even more looking forward to your results. Keep on plugging away, no need to rush.

Even though I do a lot of open matte projects, I still prefer OAR in almost every case. Having said that, I do have to say this 1st shot looks better in 16:9

I've probably said this about 1000 times before... But this film in IMAX was was a true experience for me. One of my favorite moviegoing experiences ever! So those frames you just shared look incredible! The cinematography for this film looked stellar with this open framing.
Also... THANK YOU once again!!

Depends on the movie, if I prefer OM. Some examples of ones I much prefer off the top of my head include this, QOS, definitely Top Gun (can't stand the 2.40:1 ratio on that one), FBDO, The Game, Casino, Ghost Protocol (for Imax scenes alone), Apollo 13, Judgement Night (wish there was a hd source for this one, making do with Good Times dvd for now), T2 (if only we could get a true OM hd version of that without the corners lopped off), Collateral (for Open Matte scenes alone).

Ok a little update.
After 462 hours of upscaling and countless hours of NLE work, I finished the last bit, aligning the two HDTV broadcasts and the BD.
Near as I can figure, I got the BD aligned with the HDTVs for 80% of the movie (sans credits). The only shots I had trouble with were those that did a tilt and pan or an on the fly zoom. That made alignment by hand almost impossible. I've still got to scan back over the whole thing to check my work.
If any regular members would like to help I might need a second pairs eyes to take a look at the finished work.
