Replacing overlapped foreign audio
#1
Hi all,
I've heard it's damn near impossible to replace foreign audio that overlaps with English audio. I have John Candy's last film "Canadian Bacon" but this version is completely different then what was released. The only problem is that it has Russian audio overlapped with English. Now again, I know it's impossible but there has to be a way it can be fixed.

Most likely there is nothing you can do to remove the Russian dubbing. However I have heard of rare instances of home releases with Russian dubbing like this that have the two languages stored on the same track but out of phase with each other, so that it's possible to isolate them using filters. Here's a thread about it:

It's a slim chance but as far as I know it's your only bet. I hope this helps, and let us know how it goes!

By the way, if it's just a bored sounding Russian guy dubbing all the dialogue in a monotonous voice then it's often called Gavrilov translation. You can read about it here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice-over_translation
Program material is recorded on the other side of this disc...

Had no idea a different version of this movie existed, more details and source info? It's possible Polygram/Gramercy recut the movie for the US and export markets it released it in, while the Canadian release by Cineplex Odeon you likely have (with a Russian dubbed over track for some odd reason) is a longer version or Michael Moore's original cut.

It would be wise to track down the original source (if it were a TV airing, DVD or VHS release rip) if you seek original audio. If the audio source was stereo or surround but has VO in the center, then you could run it through Audacity with ether the "Channel Mixer - Mid-Side Decode" or "Vocal Remover - Remove Center" plugins. There are other plugins and filters to try out depending on the audio editing program used, but they all won't totally remove or isolate the Russian VO dialog depending on the encode and source. It would be worth trying these methods out if you can't find the original source file with undubbed audio anywhere.

You want to try because I'm stumped. Yeah this version runs 108 minutes and has a bunch of deleted scenes.

I picked it up off a Russian tracker. Someone uploaded a copy where the audio was clean without static but still had the Russian voiceover.
