[In progress] The Shining 1980 / Open-Matte / 1080p / US Cut
#1
Smile
Project Info:

This project attempts to create the complete version of The Shining (including the original blue end credits) in the open matte format by combining a 1080p International Cut and the extended US 1999 DVD.

I don't like too much the way the UHD looks and for this movie I prefer the 1.37:1 AR. The color scheme will be the same as the older DVD. The additional scenes from the 1999 open matte DVD will be upscaled, processed with filters and then re-grained to match the 1080p version. In my humble opinion, the 1999 DVD looks more cinematic than the 1080p.
On the audio side I'll keep the 5.1 mix and I'll add the original mono soundtrack from the 1999 DVD approved by Stanley Kubrick (dolby digital). But what I really want is to add the audio from the Laserdisc (lpcm).

What I have:

The Shining 1990 International Cut (DVD, 2001) PAL with 5.1 mix
The Shining 1980 International Cut Open Matte 1080p 5.1
The Shining 1980 Blu-ray
Original mono audio (ac-3).

Anyone who could help with the 1999 DVD R1 for color correction, additional scenes and original WB logo will be welcome. I'm specially interested in the Laserdisc for the LPCM mono audio (if you have it and you can capture the video as well, this would help syncing).

There is this version on myspleen

Non OAR Full NTSC R1 DVD9 of The Shining from the 1st edition Stanley Kubrick Boxset. This DVD is 4:3 but open matte so the frame is larger on top and bottom than you would find on the 16:9 version. Also a minor note, the Warner Bros company logo is the original red and white one in the beginning.

Audio: English mono.
Subtitles: English French
Extras: Making of The Shining and trailer.

GeneralContainer: DVD Video
Runtime: 2h 23mn
Size: 114 KiB

VideoCodec: MPEG-2
Resolution: 720x480 ~> 720x540
Aspect ratio: 4:3
Frame rate: 29.970 fps
Bit rate:

AudioEnglish 1.0ch AC-3

Not sure if "The Shining 1980 International Cut Open Matte 1080p 5.1" is what I mean, but there's an iTunes 4:3 open matte in 1080p out there.

I don't have a myspleen account but, if I am not mistaken, at this moment the invitations are deactivated.

My copy: 1476x1076 and 1.59:37 (International Cut).

I guess the one on iTunes is the same, right? I don't think there's any 1080p US Cut Open Matte.

Interesting project! Always felt that The Shining worked very well in 4:3.

I also have the project to combine multiple formats of The Shining to create an open matte version with the original Warner logo and possibly blue credits. You should know that we won't be getting a "true" open matte this way though, as any transfer of this film through the years has been slightly cropped many ways (nothing major, but still, some elements are more or less visible when comparing different versions).

For my project, I've ordered :
  • The movie on DVD (Stanley Kubrick Collection from 2001 in 4:3),
  • The movie on LaserDisc (Original release from 1981),
  • A LaserDisc player that I might need to fix (it was surprisingly affordable), so I'm not holding my breath in using this avenue.
I already have the 1080p Blu-ray from 2007 and the newly released UHD Blu-ray.

If it works, I will grab the mono mix, but I fail to see how it should differ from the mono mix you already have on DVD. LPCM is uncompressed, yes, but there is no way (to my knowledge) to grab the file from the LaserDisc itself; it will be captured in analog, and therefore won't be 100% "pure".

As for the color scheme, a dead giveaway is to look at the tennis ball rolling over to Danny at 57:25. It's supposed to be yellow, but many transfers over the years gave it a pink tint. The colors from the UHD version looks perfect to my eye. If you don't have a HDR display, you might want to tone down the Whites via Lumetri Color in Premiere Pro to prevent the brightness of the skies and windows to be blown up.

Some folks over at the Original Trilogy forums have managed to buy a 35mm print of its original 1980 release back in 2015 and have been working on cleaning it, scanning it, and color correct it ever since. The classic "it'll be done in a year" project that takes much longer than anticipated : https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Sh.../id/17873/

Before anyone asks, the hospital scene is obviously not there.

When you say there's "no way" to grab the "file" from LaserDisc audio as PCM, I'm not sure if you're just specifically referring to your chosen LaserDisc or the format in general but this film exists on multiple newer and probably better LaserDiscs that do have PCM digital audio. Did you just choose the 1981 release because it's "original" or did you not know this? Even analogue LD audio is occasionally better than DVD or Blu-ray audio because more modern formats are generally more likely to have audio that has been messed with ("restored") in ways that destroy the integrity of the original presentation. With mono, it's arguably slightly less of a problem if you use a compressed source (e.g. DVD) but that doesn't make much difference if the recording has been mucked about so badly that it sounds terrible.

Also, there is a project that exists to record and then decode (after the fact) the raw RF modulated information from a modified player, but I've never looked into it in any great depth in relation to audio specifically and I suspect it's more useful for video. For PCM it's largely pointless because you can get a bit perfect copy of that already if you configure your setup correctly, which there are guides on the forum for.
