Was 1917 ever broadcast in open matte?

Just curious to re-live that IMAX experience.

I saw it twice: once in IMAX then once in 2.39:1. I felt like 90% of it was definitely framed for 2.39:1 and the IMAX version basically just looked like film that was supposed to be matted but wasn't, which sucked, because I really love full on IMAX.

And then of course there's this... https://www.rogerdeakins.com/film-talk/1...ase-dates/

But certainly for some of the grander shots it's amazing. As with THE FORCE AWAKENS, for instance, it's an excellent way to frame "character running away from explosions"; seeing smoke / dirt / whatever flying high into the air and still fitting inside the frame the whole time is really nice.

I'm not entirely sure what he's talking about re. IMAX's "silver screen" here https://www.rogerdeakins.com/post-the-di...nd-standa/... I assume this is a standard thing for IMAX theatres that I didn't know about?

Some 3D screens are silver to maintain the polarity of the L/R images

Ah. I don't think 1917 was IMAX 3D though, just IMAX... I wonder if maybe that's the problem, they need to be able to exhibit 3D so use silver screens and that annoys him.

Anyway, don't mean to derail; I would like to be able to see it open matted again as well, and I think for this film it might be cool to create a fan edit that selectively opens the frame only at specific moments. Controversial, I know. I think the variable AR thing actually helps accentuate those moments where the height works, personally; that moment in one of the Mission: Impossibles where they started in 2.39:1 and the frame grew to 1.9:1 was genuinely thrilling for me and I hate that you can't see it at home.

No worries. Deakins has been very clear that the 2.39 version of Skyfall, BR2049 and 1917 are the official versions. So I respect his wishes in that regard. And you do get a lot of dead space in the open mattes although I think that worked well in 2049. But still the “open matte” aka IMAX aka 1.90, etc is an official version that I’d like to see again.

I had a friend check local US cable and it’s OAR and that seems to be the case for broadcasts the rest of the world. I thought maybe like 2049 there would be an om on vod or something.

Yeah, though I honestly felt Skyfall was pretty breathtaking in IMAX (more so than 1917). Like I'd take IMAX framed Skyfall over 2.39:1 Skyfall any day of the week. But I think there's definitely strong evidence that 1917 was not really framed for IMAX at all, it just coincidentally happens to look fine occasionally.

That's a bummer. Maybe one day, I suppose...

I know I'm speaking the obvious here, but it continues to confound me that these films with high-profile alternate formats don't have them subsequently recaptured on home video.

Even Nolan's IMAX material gets truncated (unless you count the separately-released footage from Interstellar and TDK). Wouldn't the inclusion of an IMAX format disc be an enormous draw for home cinema enthusiasts?

Side note: 1917 at the BFI IMAX was my last 'normal' cinema visit. I did go to see Tenet locally but, you know.

You and me both.

It was almost my last cinema visit but not quite: saw The Invisible Man and Dark Waters a few days after 1917. So Dark Waters would be my last one methinks.

Was really annoyed that I couldn't see Tenet in IMAX (still haven't seen it at all yet). And Bond tickets were preordered with Cineworld...

Deakins rightly doesn't like DMR so just opens the matte
