I just don't get the idea of changing things, even when its a digital touch-up/correction like in these instances. It's like audio remixes because """better""". Just give us the original audio and original video, warts and all. I like opticals, I like the matte lines if that was the best that was originally achieved. Its all part of the charm

They were made to be that way and now they’ve been manipulated all over the place in picture and sound. People have no idea of what this does and how invasive it gets. And it’s extremely hard to get them to care or understand.
Paramount put out this and the fubared Godfather trilogy and both got outstanding reviews. Now we’re stuck with them.

I'm finishing my review and have no way to get 4K images to show the changes other than taking photos of my OLED with my phone and hoping for the best. I'm sure I'll still get people calling me crazy.

The Paramount issues rear their ugly head as well but thankfully to a lesser degree than the worst offenders-if you look very closely ringing and haloing appears infrequently along objects and people to varying degrees along with what seems like selective degraining particularly in closeups as the grain will vary from shot to shot even in the same scene. I had to really scrutinize but it is there-just look at the father son confrontation on the bike after the chase in Last Crusade and you'll see the grain vary from shot to shot plus ringing or haloing around Indy's fedora.
The HDR is ok but does give some pop out effect at times and overall I'd rather studios give up on HDR for catalog titles as it is very distracting. I still don't think they have Raiders color right though it is thankfully better than the horrid BD.
But the compression noise in spots on all three is atrocious-it's worst on shots of clear skies and especially as the Tanis dig before the map room. It's so bad it blends with the grain present and is noise city.

Don't get me started on the Raiders Atmos remix of the putrid BD remix and no original audio for all three. Plus cheap flimsy crap packaging and no new extras....as if the revisionism on all the effects shots wasn't bad enough.


Sure the Laser Pacific scans are super outdated by now but at least you don't have to worry about Temple and Crusade being messed with.

Then there's the matter of the 2.0 LD matrix audio of them both sounding better to me than any later release...there's many reasons why I always rewatch the trilogy on LD....

I still maintain that HDR on older titles is a modern equivalent of colorizing black and white movies.
It's not like the people who shot the films intended them to look that way.
I recall when the technology came out they had to actually teach filmmakers what it was.

I don't believe that 'in theaters there is more dynamic range'. Growing up, movie theaters often looked worse than modern home theater setups do now.

When it's done right, I think HDR looks fine. I think the bigger problem with HDR is that it looks bad on a lot of displays. Even high end OLEDs it looks pretty bad out of the box until you do a proper calibration.

I remember seeing a 35mm negative for a short film being color corrected at Deluxe and its very close to a how 4K looks, better than anything projected in the cinema.

Yeah, 4K in most releases, actually is finally close or exact match to what's on film.

People dispute that because they compare to older home video releases that were wrong they grew up with.
