Indiana Jones UHD Collection
#61
Damn edits. The films are perfect already. Really no need to mess with the source material, at all. A poor grade is bad enough.

I of course still purchased them as I'm a sucker lol, but I will stick with the 35mm for Raiders and hopefully the other two films in the near-ish future.

You can notice they've redone some compositing. Just watch the black bars of the plane structure. Not so transparent anymore.

I'm currently on Last Crusade (I'm doing them in reverse), I compared with my muxes of the Blu-ray, OMG, the Blu-ray looks sharpened and like bad video. I guess I'm going to have to find out the extra shot place, and extend my french and english remuxes of the LDs by one frame.

I watched the trilogy this past couple of days projected at 4K on a 2.69 meter (106") diagonal screen and all three look very good. Raiders still has a warm color grading, but refined compared with the Blu-ray. It's still not like the original, it's in between. Temple cut back on the red push the old master had. Crusade, too. I guess they recomposited some old VFX shots because at 4K they would stick out like a sore thumb. As a purist, I wish they didn't do it but they did it quite tastefully. Those shots still have an old school look to them. It doesn't betray the films as we know them.

Tomorrow, I'll watch Skull .

Skull UHD starts with a minus 7-frame delay compared with the Blu-ray and it lasts for nearly an hour, then it's minus 6, then it's minus 5 till the end. So 2 resync points remain to be found on top of an initial delay.

I'm not so sure that they effects shots have been recomp'ed so much as they've been taken, as is, and tweaked. In most cases, in the effort to remove matte lines, we've lost information. In the case of ToD, they've stablized the mountain when the plane hits it and explodes but it's created some weird motion side effect on the explosion itself.

The Atmos remixes are interesting. While spot checking ToD, I immediately noticed that the panning on Willie's voice during "Anything Goes" is a lot smoother when she moves from centre frame, to the right and back again. It's more like the stereo mix. The previous remix kinda jumped from channel to channel, as it probably did on the 70mm mix. Dialogue panning seems smoother all round. Instead of full left or right channel, it'll also be at like half-volume in the centre. Lots of overhead action in the the spike trap sequence, which was fun.

When they emerge from the trap, the chanting from the temple fades in after the cavern shot, like it did on the stereo mix (it cuts in on the multi-channel mix). Also, the (false) stutter when Wille says "Indy! For God's sake, help me! W-what's a matter with you?" from the stereo mix is back.

I'm no expert, but they're just a few things I noticed.

So they changed Skull color grading. Maybe so that it looks more in line with its predecessors. I'm not sure it's faithfull to the original prints, though.

How can we remux the Crusade LDs tracks without re-doing them? I'm guessing half a frame delay is not noticeable?
