[Help] The Thing (1982) -> Best Mix?
#41
There are quite a few Japanese LD releases, perhaps one of them has the original soundtrack? This one seems promising:

I think I’m going to keep the Turbine 4.1 and sync the other five 2.0s. I’ll compare them myself but I’ll include every one of them in the final project.

I’m definitely going to fix the superstition part in the WS LD.

Sorry, but are we talking about "Superstitious" song? If so, the Signature laserdisc has it.

OMG, I had this on VHS many years ago and always thought something was not quite right when 'Superstition' came on while watching it later on in life on DVD, etc.

Now I know why.

That Funky disco c**p they replaced it with makes me laugh every time I hear it.

I decided to take a gamble on the 89 Japan LD. Will let you know once I get it capped.

Bad news. I spoke with the seller and he confirmed SF047-1632 also has the changed music, along with PILF-1621. This leaves only PILR-1090 (rental) and PILF-2717 (Signature Collection) as candidates, but considering ones a rental of another edition, and the Signature is most likely the same as the US version I think we are probably screwed on finding an unaltered digital stereo mix.

40946 USA '90 (changed music)
42654 USA '98 Signature Collection (mixdown)

SF078-0061 JP '85 (analog only)
SF047-1632 JP '89 (changed music)
PILF-1621 JP '93 (changed music)
PILR-1090 JP '93 (rental version of PILF-1621?)
PILF-2717 JP Signature Collection '99 (mixdown?)

The audio tracks from the Shout! BD sync to the UHD with an initial delay of +1000ms and remain in sync throughout the movie. Turbine and Arrow lose sync after the test scene.

The Shout! 2.0 also most closely resembles the WS LD which (despite having the altered music) is probably closest to the original mix. So I'm going with Shout! for now until somebody tells me different.

1000 or 1001 ms? It seems to me the 1001 delay is very ubiquitous when it comes to remasters for some reason.

it is 24 frames at 23.976fps, hence 1001ms

...not that someone could hear a 1ms out of sync, though... Big Grin
