[Help] The Thing (1982) -> Best Mix?
#71
(2021-09-17, 08:31 PM)Scavenger Wrote: In my Turbine BD tracks sync I added:
- 48048 samples / 1001ms (24 frames) at the start
- 16016 samples / ~334ms (8 frames) after the blood test scene (copied samples 249551072-249567088 and pasted them at 249567088)

I encoded the 4.1 and 5.1 tracks back to DTS-HD MA, 2.0 as FLAC (available via PM).

Syncs up awesomely. Thank you.

despite having looked through these 8 pages, is anyone please able to summarise whats the take here? Which 4.1 track is the best and which 2.0 track? I read that the Turbine/GER Blu-ray fixes some audio sync issues that plagued the previous 4K remasters from Arrow and Shout! Factory (whatever this exactly means).

Which of the original 2.0 tracks is best, quality wise (not just sync wise to the UHD)?

Has anyone already found out the delay needed to sync to the UHD for both tracks? thank you guys.

Delays needed for Shout, Arrow and Turbine have already been confirmed in thread but best to wait on PDB to back these up.

4.1, All the same dynamics wise but Turbine is the best due to the sync fixes.
5.1, PDB hasn’t confirmed yet.
2.0, PDB has discussed differences but as yet no confirmation as to which is best. Turbine for now due again to sync fixes.

One I’m waiting on from PDB is the uncensored commentary which drifts in numerous places and I only have audio from dvd (both original and compression fixed) so don’t have a video reference to check myself. How’s that one going PDB?.

Since we are on the subject of the 4.1 track. Has anyone compared the 4.1 audio on the Arrow / Shout and Turbine versions?

Reason why I ask because if you look at the disc data on capsaholic, the Turbine release is really low on the bitrate front. Like literally half compared to the Arrow version

PDB has already confirmed they are all the same.

The bitrate difference is mainly because the Arrow 4.1 is 24-bit and Shout is 16-bit. I believe it's known that DTS-HD MA doesn't compress 24-bit very efficiently compared to 16.

Higher bitrate in this case does not equal better quality. Basically no one is capable of hearing the difference between 24 and 16-bit in a blind listening test.

There's a good chance the 24bit track is 16 bit padded with zeros. The next version of my bit matching app can detect this but it only works with mono and stereo for now. If you can extract a channel I can confirm it.

Yeah still slowly working on it. Been busy with other things Wink

I made a 1080p SDR copy from the UHD BD and checked the SDR conversion versus the SDR copy on iTunes to make sure the levels are right. (I also added grain to match the levels of the Arrow as the UHD looks slightly DNR’d). That took a bit of time to do but I did so as to have an 1080p copy on the timeline to sync. It’s just easier then a 4K copy. Plus I want to use this as my watching version. I’ll make the audio available separate from it of course.

As X5 indicated I checked the 4.1s waveforms and spectral and all three (Shout, Arrow and Turbine) are the same. I didn’t listen to them for indications of noise reduction as they looked so close to make me believe they are sourced from the same place.

In fact all the soundtracks on the Arrow and Turbine are the same, that includes the 2.0 and 5.1. So given the Turbine has better (lip) sync, I’m only using those and abandoning the Arrows. It still a mystery to me as to why the Shout’s 2.0 is different. It appears it 5.1 is the same as the others but it’s 2.0 is different. Again it looks similar to the widescreen/letterbox laserdisc with the correct music while the Arrow/Turbine look like the remixed signature laserdisc.

I still need to check the DTS MA 5.1 from the original Universal BD and the EAC-3 from the HD-DVD. The two DVD’s 5.1 are super similar with the non anamorphic a hair better.

I’m visually syncing the Turbine 2.0 in PCM to the 1080p copy to account for the changes. The current plan is to waveform sync the WS LD, Sig LD and Shout to that. I notice that there is drift between the Shout and the Turbine so the is something there.

After that it’s the discrete mixes and commentary.

So tentatively this is what I’m looking to add:

PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the WS LD w/music replacement)
PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the WS LD original)
PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the Sig LD)
PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the Shout BD's DTS-HD MA 2.0)
PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the Turbine BD's DTS-HD MA 2.0)

Dolby Digital 5.1 (from the non-anamorphic DVD)

Dolby Digital+ 5.1 (from the HD DVD) (if unique)

DTS-HD MA 4.1 (from the Turbine BD) (synced by Scavenger)
DTS-HD MA 5.1 (from the 1st gen Universal BD) (if unique)
DTS-HD MA 5.1 (from the Turbine BD) (synced by Scavenger)
DTS X (from the UHD BD)

AC-3 2.0 Commentary (from the 1st gen DVD original)
AC-3 2.0 Commentary (from the UHD BD edited)

Sorry if I missed it in your post but what's the reason for re-syncing the Turbine 2.0? Is something wrong with Scavenger's sync. Also could you possibly elaborate on the drift between the Shout and Turbine?

Very much looking forward to your finished project. Smile
