[Help] The Thing (1982) -> Best Mix?
#21
The tracks I sent you should be direct rips from that German BD. Hope the ripping tool did not any conversion, even when set to pass thru...

Besides the censored vs. Uncensored Commentary, How many different Commentary tracks exist for that movie?
So far I think 5:
- John Karpenter & Kurt Russell
- Mike White, Patrick Bromley and El Goro
- Camera Dean Cundey
- Co-Producer Stuart Cohen
- Todd Cameron from outpost31.com

I believe those are the tracks MrBrown sent me, he can probably confirm. If the 4.1 and 5.1 have better sync those will be the ones I will use assuming they are the same as the Arrow and Shout's. I remember a discussion on the sync issues. Was it just the Arrow or the Shout also? I haven't compared the 4.1 yet but I assume they are direct from Universal and should be the same. The 2.0 seem different. I will probably sync all the 2.0s.

Sync issues are present on all other available tracks, Turbine was surprised no one else had fixed them prior to them. May cause an issue syncing the Turbine Tracks if using waveform rather than visual . As far as I am aware its an extra 24 frames needs to added at the beginning so delay of around 1001ms, and removal of an extra 8 black frames directly after test scene so a delay of around -334ms, give or take a few ms on each (but no expert when it comes to syncing). As said not sure if they messed with dynamics of the tracks when syncing them.

Curious how the Arrow 2.0 is like the CE LD 2.0, while the Shout 2.0 is like the WS LD 2.0.  I would have figured the Arrow and the Shout to be identical.  It makes me wonder which one, if any, is authentic to the 35mm Dolby Stereo mix.

That's useful information. So it seems I’ll have to visual sync the Turbine to the UHD and then sync the other track via waveform to the Turbine. That adds to the complexity. Luckily, MrBrown gave me a small video copy of the German/Turbine along with the audio to sync to so hopefully it shouldn’t be too difficult. Famous last words.

I would have assumed they would be identical also but that’s why I always check. We have reached the point where we can’t assume anything anymore.

Again I haven’t listened to them yet but visually they don’t look alike. I’m not saying the Shout is the WS LD, I’m just saying the Shout looks closer to that then the expected Arrow. It seems they sourced the 2.0s from different places. I have to volume match them first before I speak too far in advance.

Which is the "Signature" LD? zoidberg mentioned a few posts back that the 2.0 on this disc was a folddown of the 5.1. Might explain the differences.

Like I said, outside of the initial delay of 24 frames (around +1001ms, give or take to make perfect) needing to be added to Turbine to match UHD, there is only one other instance of 8 extra black frames (around +334ms give or take to make perfect) at the end of the test scene in the UHD which need to be added to Turbine to match (not taken away as I said in previous post, given wrong info by someone so checked myself), the rest should all fall into place as the remainder is frame matched.

Yep. I did that with the Turbine 2.0/4.1/5.1 tracks yesterday. 2.0 in FLAC, 4.1/5.1 transcoded back to DTS-HD MA in DTS-HD Encoder Suite (uploaded to a MEGA folder if somebody wants to take a look at it).

I haven't done extensive comparisons with the Turbine and Arrow 2.0 tracks, but to my ears the Turbine 2.0 tracks seems to have some dynamic range compression going on compared to Arrow.

Well, one thing we can assume is that 4.1 found on Arrow and Shout is the original 70mm six track mix.

What I called the CE LD is the Signature. Same thing, the confusion is on me.

Got to compare first, I assumed the 2.0 were the same, they are not.

Thanks again X5. Does anyone know if the DTS-X on the UHD is out of sync?

Welcome Scavenger. I would definitely like to hear your syncs if you are sharing. If you already did the work I don't see much point in me doing it again and I can just sync the other 4 2.0s and tracks I have.
