This is the first time sense The 90s any form of the theatrical mix was available. The 5.1 remix for both Ghostbusters 1 & 2 was done in the mid-2000’s. I’ve been wondering what is the difference between the original mix and the 5.1’s for both films.

Ghostbsters had a 6-track mix for 70mm on its original release.
Spilt or Baby Boom?

That's a bit beyond me. I'm sure someone more tech-savvy will know.

The 70mm mix had mono surrounds as does the 5.1 track on the 1999 DVD. I've long suspected that this may be the 70mm mix but there's no way to be sure.

So the 1999 5.1 may be faithful to the 70mm sound, someone needs to get the sound of a 70mm print.

BTW I first Ghostbusters on the 1999 VHS when I was a kid, and again on the 2005 DVD made from HD masters (same masters used for the 2009 Blu-Ray), but seeing how Sony improved their tech for their MI4K line, the video was great even if it was the digibook version with the extras and DTS-MA 5.1.

I wonder if Sony will include the real original trailer for Ghostbusters 1. The one on the BD is a re-edit and scenes from the original trailer are missing.

Do mean you the teaser with the alternate theme or the the Theatrical Trailer?

Ghostbusters two’s extras are almost perfect movies this is what keep it from perfect. The montage scenes the possessed ray scenes and the key to the city ending to name few of the missing lost deleted scenes that aren’t the 19 new deleted scenes. It knocks a percent of what would have been a 100% perfect box set of they were included as well.

The new UHD has been out for awhile now, has anyone compared the 2.0 on it to the LD?

IIRC, the first 1999 DVD is based on a master used for one of the last widescreen LD editions. It's English 5.1 is a DD 448kbs of the LD tracks reportedly of the 70mm mix without any adjustments (more on this later). Sony later did a ground up 5.1 remix using the 4 channel M/D/E stems and soundtrack recordings which was used on the Japan exclusive Superbit DVD as well as on the 2005 R1/2 DVDs (it's also the basis for the recent foreign dub 5.1 tracks). When Sony did a new master for the 2009 BD, they went back and remastered the 70mm mix for the English 5.1 track (which is used on all recent releases). It added the aggressive LFE from the Superbit remix and has some volume adjustments with certain SFX/sounds along with stereotized mono rears, but other than that it's similar to the 5.1 on the 1999 DVD.

The 2.0 mix on the other hand, is interesting. The early LDs have the 2.0 track from a Dolby Stereo optical element, while later SE letterbox releases have the 2.0 sourced from the studio master tape. There's been reports of extremely rare DVDs of Ghostbusters with a version of the 1999 disc having a pan and scan version on one side (like GBII) and a single disc fullscreen edition from 2004. The single disc fullscreen has the same 5.1 options as the later widescreen DVD, while the 1999 flipper has a 2.0 track on the fullscreen side in addition to the 5.1 (probably using the 1999 VHS master since that had a 2.0 from what sounded like the studio master tape).

The 2.0 on the 2019 35th Anniversary BD as well as the Ultimate Collection UHD is believed to be sourced from the Dolby Stereo optical track rather than the studio master track.

That's some great information. Thank you. Smile

I've long been curious as to whether the 1999 DVD 5.1 was the 70mm mix. Do you know if the Criterion LD 2.0 is sourced from the optical or studio master?
