[Help] Hard Drive Recommendations
#1
Hi All

So my 10tb Hard Drive went down!
Lost some stuff as I hadn't done a recent back up!

It was a Seagate Iron Wolf NAS drive.

Any recommendations for large capacity Internal Hard Drives?

I have about 8 10TB WD Reds that have been running 24/7 for over 2 years without issues. I also have about 10 of these that have been running without issues for almost 5 years now.

I don’t have much luck with hard drives either but I do find WDs more reliable then Seagates.

I've been using WD-drives for over 15 years now for several uses (including lots of external 2,5" and 3,5" drives for backups, internal drives in my computer and my satellite-box, 4x WD Red 10 TB in my NAS since 2017) and so far only had one external 3 TB which had broken files on it. Hence why I never used a different brand and totally rely on Western Digital. Wink

What you gotta do is periodically either defrag the drive, which takes a long time, or just copy all the files to another drive, erase the drive, and copy them back. (But then you would still need to defrag).
Speed of reading the files will be x4 faster as well as copying because the drive won't go crazy copying everywhere the fragments of data.

When you do a project, you would be better using a SSD drive (even external, use a 1tb or 2tb), and just use the regular drives for archival purposes.

I had a rep from Seagate send me a free Barracuda drive a few years ago when he saw me on a forum discussing their past as unreliable. After a year the drive started disappearing from my PC so I quickly replaced it.
On someone's recommendation I got a Toshiba. 11 months later I'm starting to get SMART errors.

So while I may have wanted to get away from Western Digital, I have an 8TB WD Black arriving next week.

Server drives like Iron Wolf and WD Red are good in servers and meant to run 24/7, but they aren't intended to be powered up and down a lot like normal home PC.
And of course... always make backups.

I've been buying WDs for over 15 years now, both external and internal drives haven't failed (yet). I use a "Red" one for archival purposes (slower transfer rate but I rarely access those files), a "Black" for exporting files when working with Premiere and such, "Green" just for dowloading and saving random stuff.

I preserve movies as they first appeared in Italy.

Defraging is only necessary on old outdated filesystems (like NTFS). Anything modern such as ext4, XFS, ZFS, etc. you don't have to waste time or effort thinking about fragmentation.
