Editing PGS Subtitles
#1
Hey all, this is a very specific question, but I'm doing a fan edit of the 1973 Clint Eastwood movie, MAGNUM FORCE. Good movie, but they added a lot during production which was not in the original script (love interest, gratuitous murder scene, etc.) I did my editing in Premiere and encoding in Handbrake.

Is there a way to edit the original Blu-Ray's PGS subtitles to fit the new picture? I've kept track of the specific timecode of any of my deletions.

I was originally hoping to use TSMuxer to break the original video file (with PGS) into several segments, then append them together in TSMuxer. But, when I do that, the subtitles only work up until the first segment break.

If all else fails, I suppose I'll just do a backup version where I hardcode English subtitles. Hoping to figure all this out because A) I have a close friend who is not a native English speaker and often uses subtitles to help B) I want to know if I can fan edit any foreign films Smile

I'm on a Mac, FWIW.

I'm gonna post here so I can follow. I'm working on something subtitle related too and may need to edit: I've ripped my 3D Blu-ray of Avatar and after trying every combination of English subtitle tracks in my muxing, the forced subtitles mix with the captions but not throughout the whole film. I figure if I can edit these moments, I can get a suitable track.

This may come in handy too if syncing 23.976 subs to 24p video in the future.

Just rip your subs to make an SRT file. Resync it to your new cut. Convert it to ASS. Convert it to PGS using Bronan's tool. Done!

This. OCR is pretty good nowadays so converting from PGS to SRT is relatively simple.

Does converting PGS streams, like say one that has stylized fonts, like Avatar or even The Godfather, break that? I can sync some audio but gosh, I'm a noob with subtitle technology.

Yes, 'cause SRT has no fonts. But you can reinstate fonts in ASS format prior to your final PGS conversion. "Avatar" would be Arial + Papyrus. "The Godfather" would be ITC Souvenir.

I, too, would like to know how to do this. Converting to SRT is fine, but it strips all formatting, which I would like to keep on certain titles.

The Aluminum Falcon!

I think you can accomplish this pretty easy using TSmuxer + BDsup2sub, working on subtitle file alone. I've done it multiple times.

In TSmuxer, you just need to slipt the file in the segments you want to keep, then load them on BDsup2sub to adjust the delay, then you can joing them back in TSmuxer.

It's pretty straightforward, but if need any help just reach me here or by PM.

The good thing about this process is that it avoids OCR and doesn't change the original style on the subtitle.

It's also possible to use BDsup2sub to output a .sup file to an xml file + png files for each line, and then edit the line you want in Photoshop or whatever.
