Anyone interested, I found this completely weird release of The Abyss that escaped my radar before:
https://www.suruga-ya.com/en/product/133002591 This is a 1998 Japanese DVD release of The Abyss, predating the 2000 Special Edition DVD release by two years. This release has the TC, however, it's not the SE master cut down to match, it's the 1990 LD master that was in 1.95:1, with the longer version of the end credits (10mn version) and a 5.1 track. There are different versions of the end credits depending on the releases so I think it's good to gather the data here in this post. For the TC: "Version A"[140 min] and "Version B" [145 min]. - 1990 CBS/FOX VHS First pressing has the 5-min credits "Version A" [140 min] - 1990 CBS/FOX VHS [Second Pressing] and LaserDisc have the 10-min credits "Version B" [145 min] - 2000 Fox DVD have the 10-min credits "Version B" [145 min] shared with the SE via seamless branching. - 2024 Walt Disney Home Entertainment 4K UHD/BD have the 5-min "Version A" [140 min] with correct sound mix unlike the Cinemax HD master from 2014 (which trims the 5.1 track on the end credits to fit the 5-min Version A credits). This Japanese 1998 DVD is thus an oddity, as it's the first time, it seems, that the TC was released with a 5.1 mix (all the other releases on LD or VHS before that being Dolby Surround). Hi guys, bumping this one up. During my research, I noticed that the Japanese LDs of Piranha 2 are for some reason of different length that either the producers cut or the James Cameron US cut. It's listed at 91mn (instead of 94 or 84).
I did some foreign language research and found on a german board someone claiming the JP version is a hybrid of the JC cut and the international cut. The guy gave the exact LD running time with seconds, so I assume he owns a copy. There's some confusion over this JP LD, because someone on imdb put info saying the JP is uncut in comparison to the US cut. So people @moviecensorship assume it's just the international cut (but they didn't check as they don't have a copy). There's two versions of the LD, and both are listed as 91mn, so either it's a Pal speeded up version of the film (which I doubt as the reissue is from the 90's where this stopped happening), or it is a unique cut (maybe it's JC cut with full added gore before the MPAA asked to cut stuff to get an R). I'm currently trying to find someone who own a copy in our circles, but to no avail (people usually own the Embassy LD due to it's uniqueness). If anyone owns the disc, please contribute to this discussion to help solve the mystery ! Pardon me for the slight error as I couldn't find slight the word "First Pressing" Ergo, this 1996 VHS from Fox Video is the only version I can think of at the moment and what I believe what edition MCMcommunications was talking about. I'm confused now LOL, so the shorter Version A credits aren't on the first press, but on the 1996 VHS?
Regarding Japan LD of Piranha II, one generous forumer stepped out and I was able to sample it, it's the international cut and not Cameron's cut. However it's also 90mn long as I stated, so I need to align it with the Blu-ray and see where they differ, and if there are cuts.
