Xanadu DVD 4.0 to bluray

Finally got a chance to listen to these tracks side by side and phew.
The new DTS-HD MA sounds flat. It's smoother, sure, but the 4.0 track sounds like it was actually recorded in the environments where the people are talking and not a studio like the Blu-ray.

Best of all, the 4.0 DD track has crisper high frequencies. No contest, I like the DVD audio track better. Thanks uVSthem.

Interesting that the DTS track has the artifact of being mixed near a CRT monitor and the DVD track doesn't.



Edit: Just listened to "Dancin'". Um, the 4.0 track sounds like there is a drummer behind you who is out of sync with the song. Weird.

Speaking of musicals, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has set Robert Greenwald’s Xanadu (1980) for 4K Ultra HD release on 8/19!

KL pretty much always releases untouched, non-upmixed audio tracks. Fingers crossed.
I really like the 4.0 mix, but there are some weird rear surround things that seem out of place that are missing from the 5.1 mix.

Has KL released 70mm non split surround 6 track audio before? I think they only release original mixes if they are mono or stereo.

I have no idea. I'm just never know if their audio tracks are them being cheap or more original.

Curious if anyone has had the chance to compare this track with the Kino Lorber 4k BD's release that supposedly has the same 4.0 in higher quality.

You all make great points, but there is a huge difference between the original dvd 4.0 track and the magical musical edition DVD and bluray. Doctor M noticed it. If you compare, almost ALL surround sound effects were completely removed for the 2nd DVD release and the bluray. And there were dozens of great surround effects in this film. Why it was done I will never understand, that is why Kino got so many requests to ask Universal for the 4,0 track from the first DVD. I saw this film in the theater in 1980 13 times and had the original discovision laserdisc so I know this soundtrack by heart. I was stunned when I first listened to the bluray and noticed that the incredibly fun soundtrack had been ruined by someone literally taking almost all of the surround effects out. So it isn't really a matter of the sound quality of the soundtracks being different, it was a case of lots of removed information, bastardizing the intent of the original m8xers who knew what they were doing. Thank goodness Kino added the 4.0 track.
