I synced up the original region 1 DVD's Dolby Digital 4.0 track to the bluray. I'm assuming the audio on the DVD is the original 4-track stereo mix.

I thought the DVD and BD were the same release.

Wow. That's right. I used to have that other disc. I was thinking I was still watching my VHS before moving to the Magical Edition DVD.
Was the 4.0 track better? I don't remember even noticing a difference (of course, like I said, I went DVD, not BD).

I am not familiar enough with the film to tell which track is more accurate to its original showing.
Check your PM.

I compared the 5.1 on the blu with the 4.0 from the early dvd as well as a matrixed 2.0 track from a PAL dvd. Iirc the 5.1 mix had a bit more noise reduction but still sounded solid. I couldn't distinguish the 4.0 from the 2.0 mix, they sounded more or less identical but had a less NR than the 5.1 mix so either is a good option.

The 5.1 track is actually the six-track mag mix (70mm prints were advertised with six-track Dolby Stereo). The 4.0 is a discrete version of the 35mm Dolby Stereo LRCS.
I'm pretty sure the 70mm 6-track for Xanadu is the same layout as the 4 track stereo which the DVD's 4.0 mix s is based off of. The matrix 2.0 track is most likely based on the stereo 4-track which is why they sound the same. From what I have been reading, the 5.1 is an all new mix.

Most 70mm 6-tracks translate to a 4.0 home mix. When I first got a BD player I made it a rule not to upgrade any DVD that probably wouldn't show much improvement in HD, and to definitely upgrade any bad DVDs (bad transfer or aspect ratio, no English subs, etc.) Xanadu always seemed like it was done on the cheap, in both effects and films stock, so I avoid the BD for that reason. Now with 4.0 mix in hand, and the disc being under $9 (I swear it was under $8 yesterday), it's sort of hard not to pick up... I do have doubts about a UHD release being better than that if it happened.

It's a Universal release so you can bet if an UHD disc did come out it would have some new Atoms mix with no original audio option.
