[Request...] ALIEN³
#1
Okay, so there are famously 4 versions of this film. There's the theatrical version, there's the work-print, there's the 2003 special edition (aka assembly cut), and there's the 2010 updated special edition version. What's always bugged me though is that an audio change was made in the 2010 version that went backwards: in the 2003 special edition the convict that finds the alien hiding doesn't call the dog - and it makes that scene scarier. Yet in the 2010 version he calls the dog - even though we never see it! The reason is that on the BD both versions of the film us the same file (00757.m2ts) for that scene.

I would be most greatful if there's someone here who could edit the DTS-HD audio track on the file and remove the dialogue where he calls the dog.

Small but important change; I second that.

If this track is being fixed, the next thing to sort out is the appalling looping of the score in the extended climax (present in both the 2003 and 2010 versions). It's musical vandalism on a par with the Empire Strikes Back SE.

I've never edited a 5.1 mix - presumably the best approach would be to decode to a 6-channel WAV (or 6 mono tracks) for editing then re-encode back to DTS-HD?

I was reading this page a few days ago:

https://mossfilm.wordpress.com/2012/10/1...her-talks/

Seems Fincher hates the chest-burster ending just as much as I do! I always found it odd that all these edits reincorporated that travesty, the scene I hated most in the entire movie!

Quote:- replaces Ripley’s demise with the better version of the Queen bursting out of her
- Kept the original Theatrical ending with the Queen Chest burster as i felt it was a better ending.
- replaced Ripley jumping with the one from the theatrical cut

Not that I'm judging, just pointing out my hatred of the theatrical version is vindicated. I wouldn't mind trying to reproduce the 2-hour work print in HD (which I just saw for the first time!)... however I don't think anything can improve upon the assembly cut.

a few comments on a recent 35mm screening

I saw this a few years back but honestly can't describe the differences

You can do the editing direct in Adobe Premiere, straight on the timeline, then export to WAV (or W64) 5.1.

I've not done any HD audio work for a while but last I remember you need to convert the DTSHD-MA file to wav using eac3to specifically with Arcsoft media encoder, or you'll only extract the DTS core and lose the rest. You can then edit the 6 mono wavs and re-encode to DTSHD-MA using DTS-HD Encoder Suite.
