If in doubt, check the spread of sound effects across the front soundstage

BTW, the 70mm 6-track mix for Die Hard was done after the initial 35mm release - Fox wasn't sure of Bruce Willis' box office draw so no 70 prints were made until the first box office results started coming in. It's a beefed up mix compared to the original Dolby Stereo, with different sounds here and there, more aggressive panning to take advantage of the discrete tracks, etc. Grease was the same, with 'late' 70mm prints and a different mix.

and about the widescreen LD:

an excellent sounding disc and the only home video release with the original 2-channel Dolby MP Matrix mix used for the Dolby Stereo theatrical prints - plus the PCM sound is unlimited, unlike the Dolby A or Dolby SR theatrical prints.

While on the subject it appears that this statement from Disclord is incorrect. A simple search on in70mm finds that Die Hard was issued first on 70mm before regular 35mm prints.

“Die Hard” was released initially in North America in 21 theatres in 20 markets on Friday, 15 July 1988, all exclusively presented in 70mm (see list below). One week later on Wednesday, 20 July, the film was released (in 35mm) in 1,255 additional theatres throughout the United States and Canada.

So the scenario that Disclord said occured on the LDs couldn't of happened.

Oh yes, he could confuse some facts there and there. Thanks to this site, I was able to find out what 70mm release I saw in NY in what theater in the 80's. It's a great ressource.

In any case it's not uncommon for 70mm releases to have a different mix to the 35mm Lt-Rt due to the limitations of matrixed audio vs discrete

I want to say I heard it was just a downmix of the 5.1 remix. I have no proof of that and haven't done any comparisons though.

The 35mm mix for 1 and 2 you can hear on the original lbx Lds. It's a narrowed in and more intimate sounding mix on each but both still sound excellent. I can't play the UHD but from what I've heard it surprisingly sounds like they included the original 2.0 mix on the disc.

Do we have any specific differences between the WS and THX mixes that we can point as something to listen for?

I've not watched the WS disc all the way through but from what I've heard, it and the THX are very similar and they both have the sound effects in the right place across the front soundstage. If you listen to either you're going to have a good time
