Once Upon a Time in Mexico

Has the original scope version ever been released?
Or are we stuck with the 1.78:1?
I know there were prints floating about at one point, but I'm shocked it's become lost.

Rodriguez said in the new interview on the just released Arrow set, that the scope version is his preferred aspect ratio for the film.
I'm really surprised Arrow didn't push to have this version included in the set.

This along with the Rodriguez's original VHS cut of El Mariachi would have made the set that much more appealing.

I skipped the arrow set as it's so half assed, I just got the 4k desperado in the end.

can't you just crop the Open Matte Version if you want in scope?

Absolutely, but I believe all the shots were realigned on a shot by shot basis to the scope AR.
While you could just matte it or guess the adjustments for a fan project, a reference would be nice.

I considered it as a small project recently and awaited the Arrow release.

I didn't get to see OUATIM in theatres so have never seen it in 2:35:1.
I hear there were some other subtle differences, like the opening credits, with the main title being wrote in the same font as the rest of the credits and not the stylised 'logo designed' one for the home video releases.

I read on IMDB that Netflix present it in 2:35:1? Can anyone verify?

Was there a bootleg cam release at the time?

Added to this, the theatre presentation would have seen the effects of the film out from video, which would have added the characteristics of a film release print to the image like contrast and film grain.
This may have curbed some people's complaints at the time about being pulled out of the film due to its video look.
I would love to see it presented like this, as I do think it would add to the atmosphere.
But would that remove one of the reasons for making the movie, to test out the viability of using HD cams for cinema releases at the time?
Probably not, as I'm sure (at the time) the effects of the film out would have been considered when creating the 'film master' Smile

Sadly no, it's reframed totally

Hi dvdmike,

I'm not on par of what has happened with the set. I'm only interested in the movies themselves, are there any problems with the A/V presentation?

The same old masters, more expensive with missing old extras and space new extras.

No new master is a real shame, specially for the first 2 that were shot on film.

Thanks for the info!
