A Chinese Ghost Story

Ive not come across any other releases on my travels, but maybe ive missed them.
Let us know when you have a look see at what you have.

The City on Fire is the same one as you posted, bummer it's an upscale. The Ghost Story that I have does have a different color timing although it doesn't look good.

Both ACGS appear to be upscales. Odd about the color. I guess the German production company did a color pass on the upscale.

The new German versions of the A Chinese Ghost Story filmsĀ  are recycled from the Blu-rays released by EMS in 2009. They are higher in quality to the HK releases and have some HD detail but somewhat poorly resolved. I've seen some speculate they were 720p masters created for DVD. They appear to be scanned/telecined from a different print.

Yes I agree, its the same with the master EMS used for The Killer.
It looks like they were telecined from the masters supplied to foreign market right holders / distributers.

I was probably one of the people in the conversation who speculated they were HD masters for DVD back in the day Hahahaha
Resolution wise they look like they resolve around 720p, probably from a 1080i50 digital beta tape (I would of loved to get my hands on these to work from).
Looks like the U.S Dragon Dynasty release was taken from one of these and incorrecly converted to 60i, rarther than deinterlaced to 25p and slowed to 24fps, but I digress.

Id like to buy the peeps at the production house a beer who were resposable for doing these transfers back in the day.
I would love to tell them (if they were unaware) there work were responsable for the best versions available for 20 plus years Smile
The detail, levels and colours are pretty impressive for what would have been very early HD masters for the SD video market.
There is some dizzare DNR applied to some releases, but I speculate that was done in the final encode to disc (I could be wrong).

The Killer Dragon Dynasty (International Master) Bluray,

EDIT: Just to add I used the EMS DVD and later a 'corrected' Dragon Dynasty Bluray as the basis for my own fan preservation.
It has its problems, but its been my go to version for years.

Id just re-rendered it from my original project files for a new encode just weeks before the shout news!
