Arrow can still fix color grading issues, if any, as they did with the Leone films for which they used the exact same restored masters as Kino coming from L'Imagine Ritrovata. And Arrow has a better track record for encoding.

And Arrow has a better track record for encoding. Agreed. Fistful of Dollars looks great. I'm pretty sure the guys at Shout are taking this very seriously and have all the necessary assets to grade it correctly. As someone who has done a major deep dive over the years into Hard Boiled, I've always favoured the French DVD release as the closest to the 35mm release print I laid my eyes on (considering technical environments). But I'm also open to the fact that no 35mm print is the same as another, depending on the process and film stock used. It's also just my faded memories. Hard Boiled had much more blue than some of the stills I've seen as part of the marketing for this (Cannes photos), but they may very well be work in progress and probably nothing more than a representation of the OCN without adding the character of the 35mm release print variables (some thing I thought of the JP and HK true HD bluray releases). I don't want to put this project down in anyway as compared to a year ago this is just magic. Scans from a once thought lost Original Camera Negative! Awesome! Again im looking forward to this beyond words ![]()

I just want to add that we have never seen Hard Boiled with the detail captured from the OCN.
All home video releases have been from materials created from assets much further down the production line. This is worth a read if anyone is new to this, please contribute to it if you have any experience in this process ![]() https://fanrestore.com/thread-1415.html?...o+delivery

I have the JPN LD, to my eyes it is the same transfer as the Fox Lorber DVD but with the correct RGB levels. The Criterion LD is slightly different again but if memory serves it's in the same ballpark. The UK LD from Tartan was the same transfer (but better quality) as the widescreen VHS and is from a release print, with burned-in subtitles. At the time it was famous for having one of the longest running times for a single side of an extended play CLV LD
