Viability of cheap VHS capture
#21
Alright, the internet told me to never ever deinterlace. I guess that's settled.

But what about other options? HuffYUV, or Lagarith? YUY2, or RGB?

Does any of this even matter? I'm testing different settings and honestly can't see any difference.

Well, technically, you shouldn't see any difference between HuffYUV and Lagarith because they are both lossless, but Lagarith encoded files are usually smaller in size. (kinda like comparing FLAC and APE when it comes to lossless sound compression) When it comes to YUV2 or RGB - that's the colorspace and IMHO, for the most part, with VHS transfers it shouldn't matter much either way.

Yeah I know they're both lossless, but I asked because I'm not sure which one is smaller in size for VHS/Video8 footage and if there's any difference in encoding times later.

Well, like I mentioned earlier, Lagarith compresses to a smaller filesize than HuffYUV, regardless of whether it's VHS footage or 1080p. When it comes to encoding times later, that's a mixed bag. In my experience, there is a negligible difference between the two, with HuffYUV transcoding to a lossy format about 5% faster than Lagarith.

Would LG LV2798 be a good VCR to use for capturing tapes?

I would need to use an adapter from SCART to S-Video, but other than that are there any problems it could produce?

Does the number of heads make any difference for capture?

6 Head VCR, wow. I never owned one, only 4 head. If you can get a SCART to USB you could use VirtualDub to capture video but you'd need a separate connection for audio it looks like. This is a TV/VHS combo correct?

Somewhere in February I'll have my DVR620 delivered to me, so I could rip some tapes for you, as we're from same country Smile I can just do striaght do DVD using the VCR, or higher quality using StarTech.com USB3HDCAP.

If you still want do to it alone, why not use the video RCA that's on front panel? Smile

The program that was posted a few pages before, AmarecTV does great job. It gets video from my capture card, and audio from Line in on my sound card, and does that simultaneously.

What do you mean by TV/VHS combo? Pretty sure it's a regular VCR, but I'm no specialist here, I haven't used one in years. Smile

Nah I like to play with it myself, but thanks for the offer. Smile

But isn't that video in? Like, for sat and whatnot?

That's possible too, didn't think of that. SCART doesn't really provide best quality afaik, but it should be enough.

Would SCART->S-Video offer better quality than normal composite video?

I think SCART is the only cheap option, all VCRs I see on sale (at least in reasonable prices) have it, no S-Video.
