This project switched from old Blu to new 4k which Beber kindly supplied. As Beber said, the final showdown isn't really ideal on new 4k. At times it turns ino a mess of blue/pink/red palette. I like the colors on the old Blu much more for that sequence. As the framing is mostly done, I'm tinkering with that showdown. This is one LUT applied to that whole sequence.

It's the left side that looks better here, except the blues should look more cyan, as in the final cloud of smoke or when light goes through the "rain". It's the only moment I can recall where the remaster missed the mark compared to a 35mm film print.

Not getting better results before everything goes too green...

Maybe try as basis to color match Riggs on the wet asphalt from the old blu-ray to the UHD grade and then use the resulting LUT on the final showdown to see if you get cyan as on the wet asphalt in the remaster as seen in this picture on the right here. Ignore the one on the left:

Nice idea, I'll try it out.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Both in old Blu and new 4k wet asfalt shots have some amount of cyan so the resulting LUT only slightly pushes highlights from blue to cyan but it also pushes the rest in the showdown sequence all wrong, shadows and skintones go brownnish in some shots... I think that sequence is so baked in blu/pink/red in some shots on new 4k that irying to fix them is a pain in the ass. I'm getting more inclined on using the old Blu for that sequence., with a few percents lower saturation. It alredy had that cyan push and the rest of the colors are better defined.

Too bad. Still, to me, the remaster looks better (as in more faithfull to a print) in that sequence, too. Blue is still a better approximation than yellowish-greenish brown. Maybe try to reduce the pink without touching the blue...

There are a few films I think would look good in scope.
This one would certainly match the rest of the series in this ratio and your screenshots look good. The titles are still a little tight, you could try 'squishing' them down slightly vertically? I can not remember the exact shots involved (are there any of the girl?) so it may not work.

The 4k I'm working on now has better framed titles and I only had to squeeze Clapton and Kamen a bit vertically. here's some of the wrestling with restless camera operator ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
