[Request] Over the Garden Wall - Original 5.1
#1
Hi,

I haven't seen the Cartoon Network TV miniseries Over the Garden Wall yet, but I'd like to watch it on Amazon and get the Blu-ray. I'd like it if someone could rip the original 5.1 audio tracks from the Amazon 1080p web-DLs of the miniseries and sync them to the Blu-ray.

Thanks,
James

Edit: Changed HBO Max to Amazon as the 5.1 tracks are on Amazon.

Is there any indication it originally aired in 5.1? The credits don't have a dolby logo or anything.
I think the 2.0 on the BDs are more "original" and I'd assume the 5.1 is an upmix.

See here.

IMDB says the original mix is Stereo.

I don't exactly trust either of those sources explicitly. But going off the credits, it being an animated TV show that probably has a smaller budget, and the fact that the BD doesn't have a 5.1 I'd lean towards IMDB being right.

I cannot say I know the exact mix-job specifications that broadcast TV had at that time and whatnot, but I did read this on the Blu-Ray Forum site review which is a bit interesting in regards to this particular matter.

Similarly, the DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio mix offers a suitable lossless upgrade for the DVD's Dolby Digital mix, which is listed as true 5.1; without that older disc on hand for a direct comparison, I can at least say that the Blu-ray's 2.0 track appears to support Dolby Surround encoding for a notably more atmospheric experience should you choose to go that route. Dialogue, sound effects, and of course Over the Garden Wall's unforgettable songs and original score are nicely prioritized and sound exceptionally good here. While that true (?) 5.1 mix or even a full Dolby Atmos overhaul would have been interesting to hear, this is a very rich and memorable presentation in its own right.

Optional English (SDH) subtitles are included during all 10 episodes only, not the extras listed below. This may have been an oversight by WB, as they're usually good with preserving subs that were present on the DVD edition.

So a part of me now wonders what the odds are that it was originally mixed in surround and that the 2.0 is just a Pro Logic downfold (or whatever term they go by anymore for their matrixing).

It certainly wouldn't be the first time contemporaneous BD releases opt for releasing mixes in a downfolded matrix rather than providing the channels discretely (I'm looking at you Criterion).

Interesting, that's a more compelling argument. I still think it's a little sketchy with there not being a dolby logo in the credits.
Looks like the DVD released in 2015, and the earliest BD was 2016. Now I'm curious about tracking that down.

Although there's also a chance that the 5.1, regardless if it's "original" or not, is just a lazy upmix with little to no activity outside the front 3 channels. I see that a lot when looking at older TV shows, even ones that aired with digital 5.1 audio.

I also wonder if there's any HDTV captures of the original airing.

I suppose the easiest way to check all of the above is by somehow getting ahold of the discrete surround mix and cross-referencing it with the stereo matrixed mix (post-upfold) and see if they share the same activity in the rears or whatnot—as well as just generally gauging how much use they get.
