Frankenstein (1931) Audio Preservation
#81
Perhaps. And sadly they don't tend to turn to past releases to add assistance. You'd think they could at least attempt something along the lines of what we're doing, especially considering they probably better tools then we do, but I guess they rather work with a more authentic source and hence we get an aged track. It's probably why by 2012 the mono track for Jaws IMO wasn't as crisp as it was in 2005. Sometimes leaving it in the can can really be a let down for later on. Then again lemme ask you. Do u feel this was a case of Universals team being lazy or something that as far as they were concerned was unfixable????

It's probably a combination of a little bit of both, depending on which part of the audio you're talking about. But more lazy, when the untouched LD audio (and even the VHS audio) is mostly superior to the "cleaned" BD audio... well, there's your answer.

Anyway, I'm freakin crashing and need some z's but wanted to post another update...

So, first, let me get this out of my system: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!

Ok, so in my last update I stated that I have roughly about 12 minutes of audio to go through and that there were already over 80 re-cuts... Well, within the next 7 minutes there are over 30 (!) more cuts (mostly to fix drop-outs, but a couple of re-syncing cuts too) I still have the last five minutes left which is a mess. The LD and BD are timed very differently for these last five minutes and I'm gonna have to play some tricks to make sure that everything remains seamless. In the state it's now, the first 65 and a half minutes are done and ready to go (did another test render, checked it and I gave it a "green light," LOL) but... yeah, these last five minutes will require another two to four hours of work and I just don't have it in me right now. Will resume tomorrowWink

Easy my friend. No rush! It's just an audio project, not trying to dismember a bomb!..or is it?? Wink I've waited a long time for this and I'll wait as long as I have to. You have your own commitments and all of us respect that. Finish this when you have the time. The waiting is making me more excited for this anyways since based on what I've been getting out of what you've been updating us with this will probably sound better than I'm anticipating!!!

I know there's no rush, but I just want to be done with itWink

Yet again, the fact that I'm a stubborn perfectionist is proving to be valuable because, especially now, I see why someone else would give up on this...

I'm actually looking forward to finishing this one so I can mux it with the BD video and watch it with the superior quality of the LD audioTongue

Lol. Too funny. At this point I'm kinda hoping this is the trickiest sync job ever. You've put so much time and effort into this.

Well Im a rather stubborn perfectionist myself so I guess I placed this track in the right hands! Wink Perhaps this me flashing my ego a bit but I just find it sad that we can create something better than what the OG people give us!!

Ok, so I finally have the entire film synced but I'm still not done. There are still a few audio drop-outs I have to address, but I won't get to it until later tonight... Almost there:victory:

Glad that was amusing to someoneTongue

Honestly, this is in my top five worst, surpassed only by syncing jobs where I had to sync one VHS tape to another VHS tape (both captured from crappy tapes and VCRs with no TBC when it was really needed)

Hopefully, hearing the finished result here will give you a little more confidence about what I'll be able to do with GBU, as I'm sure that one will not be the easiest sync job in the world either.

So it's the worst LD/BD sync then. Wow.

I'm really looking forward to the finished product. I'm sure it's going to be quite impressive.

I'm really hoping GBU won't be too bad, but that's just wishful thinking.

Doesn't surprise me a damn bit as there's probably a frame or a handful missing in every other shot, particularly the ending which were always targeted by censors-particularly Drac and The Mummy.

The SQ difference is also probably due to loudness compression, as is done in the music industry. If you look at any restoration docus its usually shown in the audio suite where you can see the waveforms for an audio mix are jacked up to incredible levels. IIRC you see it in the Jaws and possible Dracula piece, where the waveform of the audio is boosted beyond limits and has lost its dynamic range.

Not that it matters but in case you were curious jerryshadoe, the glitch in the VHS track I referred to back in my first post is in the scene following the scene where the Monster is brought to life. It's when the burgomaster hands Elizabeth the flowers and says 'I brought you these flowers'. Due to the glitch it now sounds like 'I brought thflowers'. For the record this was either a tape glitch or a capturing glitch, nothing to do with the actual film. I have another DVD captured from the VHS and this instance was fine IIRC.
