x264 BD compliant "perfect" settings
#81
Using Megui to use these Perfect settings to test my lagarith avi of MIGP and have set it up as below.
Can't see the option to include intkey 24, is it needed, if so where is the option. Also, how do I close the gops, won't let me untick the open box. Does everything else appear correct, eg, Deblocking setting etc.

Also took a look at Simple x264 launcher to maybe use that instead but can't workout where to set these settings.

Any help much appreciated.

You are much better off using Simple x264 Launcher. You don't need to set all that stuff, and --open-gop is deprecated when used with --bluray-compat (it has no effect). I don't set --weightp to 0, I don't know why Andrea does. You haven't set the threads, that should be set to the number of CPU threads (usually double the number of cores, if you're unsure run cpu-z and check).

Agree, Simple x264 Launcher is... well, simple! Big Grin You can input settings directly in the bottom (small) input window.

--open-gop:

https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=154533
Quote:this will tend to resolve pulsing picture problem that is usually came with short GOP's.

--weightp:
dunno... can't remember! Indeed, could be 1 as well to be compliant (and I suspect could be beneficial to do so)

Thanks valeyard, worked out how to set the keyint 24 now. I,ll set the threads to 4. What about the deblocking settings, leave them at -1 or change to 0.

In regards to simple x264 launcher, which I would prefer to use, are you saying all these settings are already correct and all I need to is add the source, set it like below and the program will do the rest:

Thanks spoRv, could you post an example of what I need to put in the custom encoder parameters of simple (and what needs to be changed to suit my project) and as I asked valeyard, if I need to change anything in my screenshot.

Copy&paste into the "Custom Encoder Parameters" input window:

Code:
--bluray-compat --level 4.1 --keyint 24 --sar 1:1 --slices 4 --vbv-bufsize 30000 --vbv-maxrate 40000 --b-pyramid none --weightp 1 --colorprim bt709 --transfer bt709 --colormatrix bt709 --merange 24

changed --weightp value to 1, so valeyard should be happy! Big Grin

Select encoding speed (I think slow has the best quality/time ratio; never use ultrafast!) and go!

Thanks spoRv, actually worked out it for myself by copy and pasting original script and removing what it didn't like but added the --weightp 1 as you have done. Decided to go with very slow instead of slow as I I'll just leave it to encode for however long and inch out the best quality. I assume everything else is correct then.

Honestly I just use the command line for everything now. I have a .bat file which I edit each time.

Actually --weightp 0 and --b-pyramid none are both allowed within --bluray-compat. --bluray-compat only prohibits --b-pyramid normal and --weightp 2. Open and closed GOPs are technically both allowed.

The --b-pyramid, --weightp and --open-gop settings are there to improve compatibility with hardware players. Obviously you can use any settings you like but the ones in the OP are the recommended ones, obtained through experience.

I also like using the commandline - it also has the advantage that you can pipe complex stuff into any version of x264 you like (Currently playing around with x264 tMod) - for example you can apply a 3D LUT with ffmpeg (or any other ffmpeg filter) on-the-fly then pipe straight into x264

Plus - you can always reuse your old scripts at any time getting an identical result (because the original x264 exe file you used is still in the folder)

Thanks to you both zoidberg and TomArrow.

I'll try out Simple x264 Launcher first but if one of you could post a quick tutorial on how to use the command line that would be great as I would love to try it that way as well.
