Thumbs Up Miami Connection
Posted by: mumbles_ - 2015-06-11, 06:42 AM - Forum: Movies, TV shows and other - No Replies

For those who haven't heard of Miami Connection--it's about a group of Tae Kwon Do/University students that are also in a band called 'Dragon Sound' who end up getting entangled with drug dealing ninjas that ride motorbikes. All this is actually set in Orlando, Florida despite the film being called Miami Connection (it was actually a play on Bruce Lee's Chinese Connection rather than The French Connection). This movie is all kinds of bad. I'm extremely hyped for the guys from Rifftrax riffing it live in theaters in October!

It's a guilty pleasure because, to me, it's the ultimate so bad it's good film. I recently screened it for some friends at our movie night and it was a pretty big hit... my friend and I (whom I also work with) would just bust out singing 'Friends' every time I see him. I would make references to skits from Kids In The Hall and he would just ignore it and start talking about Miami Connection instead. (I've created a monster!) Has anyone else seen it? What's your favourite scene/lines from it?

The blu-ray contains scenes that were edited out of the movie that I intend on re-inserting into the movie and retaining it's HD format. If I knew more about restoration I would probably try to fix some of the damaged scenes but I think it's best to retain it's grindhouse quality, after all it's meant to be seen that way.

  Restoration tips: HD matrix surround™
Posted by: spoRv - 2015-06-11, 03:34 AM - Forum: Restoration guides - Replies (17)

HD matrix surround™

What is HD matrix surround™?

It's a discrete multichannel track, originally matrixed in a stereo sound, and then hardware decoded (hence the HD) using the best, and rarer, matrix hardware decoder.

Why?

Because some vintage hardware contains certain dematrix methods different from the usual Dolby Surround, Pro Logic etc. found in every modern decoders; they had that analog sound that could be even better than newer methods.

How does it work?

The matrixed stereo track (usually encoded in Dolby Surround, but could also be DTS Stereo, UltraStereo, CHACE Surround Stereo etc.) is played in the best hardware player (laserdisc, VHS, VHD etc.) using the best cables; the stereo output go in a matrix surround hardware decoder (the older and high-end, the better) to extract at least four different channels (usually Left, Center, Right, Surround) to get a discrete 4.0 multichannel track; those four channels are then captured using two sound cards with a stereo input, one sound card with four discrete inputs, or capture the track twice using a single sound card with a stereo input.

It's possible to get a stereo surround using an hardware stereo synthesizer or a software solution; an LFE could be obtained using a low/high pass filter to route the basses to the LFE and leave the other channels bass-free, either using an hardware or a software solution.

But will it sound better than, for example, Dolby Pro Logic II?

Albeit DPL II is a great matrix surround decoder, some older technology *may* sounds better, or in a different way... at the end:

Quote:Analogue domain matrixing encoding: Dolby Surround (only one spec of its kind there, 4 channels to 2)
Analogue domain matrixing decoding: Dolby Surround
Analogue domain matrixing decoding with steering and individual channel level control through h/w logic (proprietary circuitry depending on manufacturer, with, if at its most basic can decode Dolby Surround as is, then permitted to use logo): Dolby Pro Logic
Analogue domain matrixing decoding with steering and individual channel level control through h/w logic with different emphasis on center and rear for reproducing conventional non-Dolby Surround encoded stereo music tracks: Dolby Pro Logic II

(taken here)

Any hint about which decoders are better?

I've made some researches, and the following are among the best, alternative active matrix surround decoder ever produced:
  • Shure HTS 5300 / 5200 / 5000 (Acra-Vector technology)
  • Fosgate Tate II 101A
  • Fosgate Model 3 / 3a / 4 / 5
  • Aphex ESP-7000 / Proton SD-1000
  • Harman Kardon Citation 7.0 / 5.0 (6-axis technology)
  • Lexicon LOGIC 7 (first models)
  • Involve Surround Master

avoid Circle Surround I / II and DTS-Neo 6, as a Dolby Pro Logic II seems to be always better than those.
EDIT 2021-08-24:
Even if the original Circle Surround decoder should still be avoided, Circle Surround II seems to be a very improved version - it extracts up to 6.1 channels (L C R LFE Sl Sr Sc)

About DTS Neo 6, there are various versions available: difference lies in particular to the number of bands it splits the signal, but the big problem is that it's difficult (if not impossible) to understand which version a particular decoder uses. According to Disclord, it made a good job upmixing DS encoded tracks.

My last thought: even if DPL I is IMHO the best encoder to get the 4.0 track AS CLOSER as possible to the one heard in the theaters, the others may (or may not) do a good job too; take in mind, though, that the results between different decoders could be slight or huge, hence comparisons should be made.

Is it always possible to use more than one decoder: for example using one for the Left/Right and another for Center/Surround, or add a stereo  synthesizer to obtain a pseudo-stereo surround where the decoder outputs just a mono surround.

Notes

Here we are talking about HD matrix surround™ - where HD stands for hardware decoded... of course, we could also have SD matrix surround™ - where SD stands for software decoded; there are some interesting plugins for popular software like Foobar2000, that decode somehow a matrixed track; it's difficult to say how good could be the final result, but it *seems* hardware decoders produce decoded tracks of better quality.

EDIT 2021-08-24:
LAST NOTE: if someone decides to put an HD (or SD) matrix surround™ track on a project, PLEASE ALWAYS STATE which decoder was used!

  Someone lives in Denver?

I'd like to obtain a piece of hardware, but don't know if the seller would like to send it here to Italy... if not, someone who lives in Denver would like to pick up it, and send it to me? Of course, I'll pay the shipping cost!

On board with you guys!
I started collecting fan-edits and restorations from fanedit.org. Then, searching for preservations of THX1138 i searched (and found!) in originaltrilogy.com and, finally, landed here!
Let me tell you one thing, cat-man... your passion for movies is really remarkable. Thanks for all of the time you spend working on your projects.

I'm working on a theatrical letterbox reconstruction for "Interstellar", i hope to finish soon...

Thaks again. Bye!

Star Wars mid 1980s tv airing to DVD
Posted by: lipscgr - 2015-06-10, 04:34 PM - Forum: Official and unofficial releases - Replies (21)

I am not quite set up for full laser disc extractions, or ripping DVDs and editing video. My mother has an original TV airing of Star Wars from the mid 80s with mid 80s commercials. Hopefully she can find it, and I want to do a quick capture of the VHS to DVD using a standard recorder. Any thoughts on this. She is coming this weekend and hopefully she can find the tape.

Sliver (1993) 35mm Trailer scanning - Needs funding | UPDATE
Posted by: bendermac - 2015-06-10, 03:01 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (3)

https://imdb.com/title/tt0108162/

The trailer for Sliver has never been released on LD/DVD/BD. A copy from a VHS made it's way on the internet a long time ago and the quality is pretty bad. So using that as source for trailer reconstruction was out of the question. BUT I've found a 35mm copy of trailer a while ago and now it lies just around. So here I'm asking who can help to get this trailer scanned. This includes helping with shipping cost and of course someone willing to scan it.

Jurassic Park Trilogy 35mm Teasers & Trailers
Posted by: bendermac - 2015-06-10, 02:55 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (36)

It always bugged me that Universal never added the trailers in HD on the Blu-ray. Heck they even omitted the Teasers from part 1 and 2. So here I'm asking if we can get the trailers for these movies from 35mm prints... if price are reasonable. The Teasers could be expensive Sad
But maybe someone here already has them Wink

Anyway... what do you guys think?

Hi all,

Registered here a while ago but never introduced myself, I guess. Came here from the OT forums, where I mainly follow Harmy, Mike Verta, Team Negative-1, and now DrDre's projects. Dre's superresolution experiments have had particularly exciting results in the last few weeks. As far as editing goes I've done a few little projects for myself, but I've recently shared a version of THX-1138 that I compiled based on the 1971 16mm film, blu-ray, and laserdisc. Might have a couple other things in the works. Thanks for having us here!

Big Grin Hey there!
Posted by: mumbles_ - 2015-06-10, 07:57 AM - Forum: Presentation - Replies (4)

Hello everyone... I'm new here.

I've worked on some DVD edits in the past of Kill Bill Vol. 1&2 Uncut, an Evil Dead 2/Army of Darkness cut I dubbed "THE mediEVIL DEAD" (with alternate cuts throughout) and a fixed version of Skinny Puppy's 'Ain't It Dead Yet?' (v3.1). I've been a member on OT for some time now and heard about this site via Team_Negative1's project. Personally I can't wait to see it! Big Grin

I've noticed I'm not able to do much of anything on here yet... is there a reason for that? Thanks!

OK, I must admit this film has more than a flaw... CGI is... well, atrocius? And green screen worst, acting bad, story thin... so, why one would want to see it? Well, the redhead is simply gorgeous! Wink And, at the end, it's a Z-movie that many fans will enjoy, I'm pretty sure... but first, read some seriuos reviews!
