Just some random thoughts:
- if a DVD was released as full screen (sometimes as full frame), it can be either open matte or pan&scan
- few Pixar films has the frame "recomposited" for the full screen version
- a super35 film usually can have both 1.33:1 or 1.78:1 versions, or both (or any...)
- a movie filmed using anamorphic lenses could, in some cases, have few lines more on top and bottom in its 1.78:1 version - or even more image on one of the sides
- almost no title has a full-lenght full open matte version - meaning that its frame contains completely the widescreen frame seen in the theaters; often, some shots are like them, though!
