I mean if you were to overlay the Blu-ray footage on top of the upscale, would it... never mind.

I guess my confusion was the the DVD in question is open matte whereas the BD is 1.85, so you couldn't overlay it to any useful effect.

PDB,

Just give me a head's up via pm when you're ready for me to upload the Spiderman DVD DTS files. The other's I'll have to send to DoomBot for him to work on.

These do look really amazing, I am impressed with the results. Would you mind sharing your .avs script for Batman? I'd like to have some fun with it, would love to be able to upscale like you Smile

Interesting and great idea. There are many things left by the wayside, and I'm most excited about the Batman cap where the open matte looks great with the old video processing color look removed (that is the same on VHS and LD) I've often wondered what the Batman series would feel like opened up but only can check against my old VHS tapes since I lack the original flipper discs. If you tackle more, Forever would be nice too.

It might be a good idea to tackle the post 2001 Kubrick stable to have the best all around fully functional open matte presentations since they're never going to be reissued that way ever again and some of the DVDs leave much to be desired.

For Batman, I was unsure which way to go. Some 35mm had yellow hightlights, some had white or blue hightlights. I went with the white/blue since it made the white balance look more white. And things like jokers face and Vicki Vales's (wedding?) dress became white-white. I also read the American Cinemtoghpher article for Batman and it seems to back that up a little. I could be totally wrong but at least it does get rid of the that old transfer look and it looks closer to Batman Returms which has a cool scheme.

Batman loses more at the side then most open matte but the great matte paintings benefit from the vertical space.

Barry Lyndon upscale anyone? Smile Not sure if the Shinning is needed but Full Metal might be nice.

Again there are no miracles here. Pics look one way but in motion it might be different. Just trying to manage expectations. This is not a blu-ray or true HD. Its an exercise in video improvement.

Anyway speaking of that, Back to the Future and House are done and being uploaded tonight. If you want to test either drop me a PM. BTTF is 24GB and House 17GB.

I just checked my collecttion for open matted DVD releases.
I confirm following as open matted (might be matted on the sides, but are open on top and/or bottom visibly, also might be pan/scan in some scenes, like special effet shots)
PAL:
Day of the Dead (FR DVD)
Dawn of the Dead - Argento Cut (NL DVD)

NTSC:
Dawn of the Dead - Argento Cut (JP DVD)
Predator (US DVD)
Dark City (US DVD)
Total Recall (US DVD)
28 days later (US DVD)

Hmmm that's a good list. Someone gave me a copy of Predator but all the other NTSC DVDs are tempting (outside of 28 Days since the BD is already a SD upscale)
