Excalibur (1981) - Original Mono Mix from US-LD
#21
Isn't it a dark grainy film to begin with? I imagine Boorman put stuff over the lens in some scenes to get that hazy dreamlike look.

Interesting that the framing varies a lot on some shots and almost negligible difference on others. Maybe we should start looking for a print. Wink

Yeah not great although I doubt Excalibur will ever look great because it used soft photography, filters and fog.

Having said the color timing also looks different. I prefer the HD DVD. Funny I dumped the HD DVD after the BD came out. I thought it was no longer useful.

Sure, but Excalibur could look far more detailed and be better framed and encoded than either the BD or the HD DVD. The master was probably old when the latter was released, and the disc didn't impress even in 2006.

EDIT: *guide track sent!*

EDIT: When Merlin claims as Arthur as his payment for helping Uther, he says: Now you must pay me. The child is mine. But judging by lip movement, Nicol Williamson obviously added Uther when he delivered his lines. The editing of this whole exchange is a little choppy, and in general, I don't think the lip-sync in the film is all that tight.

Damn! Turns out there were two 16mm prints on Ebay in the past few months. One was an edited for tv print though. Maybe something else will turn up?

Sorry for bringing this up. Did this go anywhere as a project? I'm still interested in the HD-DVD video with the LD(s) soundtracks.

Sorry, I haven't gotten around to synching the LD audio yet, haven't felt like doing much of anything productive for the past 6 months or so due to a new job position and some personal issues. But I've been meaning to do something for the community and it's the Obon holidays in Japan as of this weekend, so I'll see what I can do (as long as I'm not too drunk).

No worries Buster. I wasn't putting it on you, I was just curious if it was still in the air. Please enjoy the holiday.

I asked, because I randomly heard two podcasts talk extensively about the movie and thought it would be a good time to revisit it.
