I haven't found anywhere info about an open matte version of LOTR trilogy, but there were full screen DVDs, they were p&s versions of an open matte version, so at least there *should* be an open matte master used for them.

There is a 16:9 HDTV master for Fotr. The DVD is not totally P&S but still cropped on the side and open at the top.

Thanks for the link! Indeed, they are just 4:3 p&s of a 16:9 open matte version... still wonder if that open matte 16:9 version exists in some form... or if we are "forced" to buy the 35mm films to see it!

Yes the 16:9 master aired on HDTV here in the US.
Trying to find pics to show you but looks like avsforum doesn't have them any more

BD EE 2.35:1 Vs HTSV 16:9 full open matte (disregard the color grading, it's out of the scope of this thread):

Frankly, apart the screenshots, I don't know anything more...
 But, as PDB wrote before, it seems there were (are?) 16:9 broadcasts in US, so maybe it's possible to use one of them, along this Nova Cinema, to obtain a logo-free version... of course, IF both could be found... |
