Die Hard - Custom BD (v1.0)

It's her reaction closeup when John first enters the vault room corridor at the end - "Jesus." It's a brief shot but very static, which is presumably why the compressor seized the opportunity!

I finally downloaded this (my DL speed is crap!) and I love those LD soundtracks! I echo these statements about macroblocking and compression. I especially noticed it during the "shoot the glass" scene. And from what I've read and used in my own experience, the tune "film" setting is the way to go for anything using film as a source. I've even heard some people say it's good for non-film sources too lol.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will definitely try out tune film. Perhaps the in-loop deblock can work some magic.
Jonno,
I took a quick look and the shot you referred to was very soft/out of focus, the stuff either side looked OK. I think like you said, the compressor got lazy on that one!

Since I finally got the Die Hard D-VHS tape (had to be Tongue), being reminded about other HD sources, I stumbled across this thread and now I wonder whether your great preservation attempt was rendered obsolete by the recent UHD release in the meantime or rather not.

Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction, PDB. Since especially the contrast and colors seem to be very difficult to judge on HDR sources without native display equipment, I guess it's worth having several different versions preserved for Die Hard (including the D-Theater one of course Big Grin ).

1. PCM Dolby Stereo from Initial Widescreen Laserdisc release (1666-80), closest to Theatrical Audio known available short of obtaining the optical track from a realease print
2. PCM Dolby Stereo from THX Widescreen Laserdisc remaster (8905-85), a beefed-up track said to be based on the 70mm 6-track, offered as an alternative listening experience.

Hi zoidberg!

I'm a big Die Hard fan and I've seen the 4K release at the cinema a few times, but the THX's punchy bass is not there anymore. Still have good memories of feeling the floor and windows shake with the powerful THX track from my old Die Hard's VHS Widescreen series tape. I would absolutely love to have this project with the THX Laserdisc track, which I have never heard but can guess to be the same as my tape. Would that be possible? Smile
